GNAC Men's Basketball Report: Week 14

( FOR THE WEEK OF FEB. 11-17; FINAL 2018-19 REPORT )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Brian Hogan-Gary, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Jr., G - Staten Island, N.Y.)

In a 1-1 week, Hogan-Gary averaged 23.0 points, 15.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists, recording his fifth and sixth double-doubles in a row. He had 27 points, a career-high 19 rebounds and three assists in an 89-85 loss at GNAC top seed Albertus Magnus before finishing the week with 19 points, 12 boards and five assists in a crucial 75-71 road win at Emmanuel, making three free throws in the final minute, to help catapult JWU to the No. 3 seed in this week's GNAC Tournament. He shot 52.9 percent overall (18-34 FG) and 71.4% from the FT line (10-14). 

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Davon Warner, Albertus Magnus (Fr., G - New Haven, Conn.)

In just 18.5 minutes per game off the bench, Warner was a microwave in helping the Falcons go 2-0 against top GNAC opponents to solidify a share of the league's regular-season title and the top seed in next week's GNAC Tournament. He averaged 18.0 points and did not commit a turnover while shooting 54.5% (12-22 FG) overall, including 9-of-15 (60%) from beyond the arc. The rookie opened with 17 points (6-12 FG, 5-9 3PT) and two rebounds across 22 minutes in a huge 89-85 home win over JWU before scoring 19 points (6-10 FG, 4-6 3PT, 3-3 FT) in a mere 15 minutes to go with two caroms in a 93-87 victory over Suffolk that sealed the top seed for the Falcons.

WEEK 14 HONOR ROLL
Mike Rapoza, Anna Maria (Jr., F - Charlton, Mass.) - Rapoza went off for 29 points (12-19 FG, 5-6 FT) and 13 rebounds in Saturday's regular-season finale loss to Lasell after registering 15 points and 10 boards in a Wednesday loss at Emmanuel. In the two-game week, the big man averaged 22.0 points and 11.5 rebounds (6.0 offensive). 

Marcus Fox, Emmanuel (Mass.) (So, F) - Fox averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week, shooting 59/57/80% in a win over Anna Maria before losing at home to JWU. Against the Wildcats on Saturday, he posted a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double to wrap the regular-season.

Emmett Riddick, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Jr, G - Middletown, Conn.) - Riddick averaged 22.0 points over the final two games (1-1) of the regular-season for Emmanuel, dropping a game-high 27 points in the Saints' 85-71 win over Anna Maria that clinched the program's first home playoff game since 2008-09. 

Stefan Masciarelli, Lasell (Jr., G - Northbridge, Mass.) - The junior averaged 27.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in a 1-1 week, including a monster 38-point performance in an 89-75 win at Anna Maria to help clinch a GNAC Tournament berth for the Lasers. He shot 41/31/89% for the week, registering 16 points, six boards and four steals in a 93-75 loss at Suffolk before shooting 14-of-30 overall (3-7 3PT, 7-7 FT) with three caroms, three assists and three steals against the AMCATS on Saturday. 

Ademola Afonja, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., F - Staten Island, N.Y.) - Afonja averaged 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds last week, shooting 60.7% (17-28 FG) overall. Thursday, he shot 10-of-14 for 21 points, plus he grabbed 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Saturday, he hit 7-of-14 shots and all five free throws to lead the Pride with 19 points with five rebounds. During Saturday's game, Afonja broke the Regis single-season points record, finishing with 416 points this season. He completes his Regis career with 1,294 points, second on the all-time scoring list, plus he graduates as the program's career leader in rebounds with 666 boards and in blocked shots with 96 rejections.

Delshawn Jackson Jr., St. Joseph (Conn.) (Fr., G - Hartford, Conn.) - Jackson Jr. contributed in all facets of the game to help the Blue Jays to a 1-1 week and secure the No. 7 seed in the GNAC Tournament in USJ's first-ever season. The three-time GNAC Rookie of the Week averaged 19.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.5 steals in the final week, shooting 52/43/90% for the Blue Jays. He opened the week with 18 points, four rebounds and five assists in a narrow 79-77 loss on the road at Suffolk on Thursday. He followed up with a big game when USJ needed it most, dropping 20 points, grabbing 10 boards, and dishing out seven assists for his second career double-double in a postseason-clinching 85-68 win at home over Regis in the regular-season finale on Saturday.

Jack Casale, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Sophomore, G) - Casale averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 58/44/86% in a 2-0 week. The sophomore guard netted 31 points and made 11 of 15 shots -- including a 4-of-6 from three -- from the field in an important conference win at Regis on Thursday. He also had 18 points and 11 boards in a win over Colby-Sawyer on Saturday. 

Steven DiPrizio, Suffolk (Jr., F - Medford, Mass.) - In a 2-1 week, DiPrizio averaged 16.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting a scorching 70.4% (19-27 FG) from the floor. He had 16 points and 14 caroms in a win over Lasell before producing a 17-point, eight-rebound effort in a 79-77 win over USJ and a 16-point, eight-rebound performance in a 93-87 regular-season finale setback at Albertus.
