GNAC Men's Basketball Report: Week 2

(FOR THE WEEK OF NOV. 12-18)

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mike Rapoza, Anna Maria (Jr., F - Charlton, Mass.)

In a 1-2 week, Rapoza averaged 22.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.7 blocks, while shooting a stellar 77.1% (27-35 FG) overall. His week was highlighted by a 40-point, 11-rebound performance on 15-of-18 shooting in a 99-91 road loss to Roger Williams on Saturday, eclipsing the 1,000-point mark for his career in the contest. The 6-6 big man also had 15 points and 14 boards in a win over Becker and totaled 13 points with 13 caroms against Saint Joseph's (Maine), while going 14-of-20 overall at the FT line.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Chris Childs, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Fr., G - Bronx, N.Y.)

Childs dropped 25 points on 7-of-15 (46.7%) shooting, including 5-of-8 (62.5%) from three, to help lift the Blue Jays over Green Mountain, 99-78, on Saturday in USJ's lone game of the week. Childs added four assists and three rebounds in 33 minutes of action in the win, in which he also went 6-of-7 from the FT line.


WEEK 2 HONOR ROLL
Tyreek Perkins, Albertus Magnus (So., G - New Haven, Conn.) - In a 2-1 week, Perkins averaged a team-best 19.3 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting over 50% overall (19-38 FG, 5-10 3PT, 15-21 FT). He had 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting in a loss at WPI and went off for 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting in a win at Western Connecticut State. 

Patrick Coffey, Colby-Sawyer (Jr, G - Westford, Mass.) - Coffey earned All-Tournament honors at the Cave Classic hosted by Bridgewater State, averaging 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists (3.7 turnovers) as the Chargers went 1-1. In Sunday's title game, Coffey led the Chargers with 25 points (9-18 FG, 4-7 3PT)  to go along with nine rebounds and seven assists in a tough 91-82 loss to Salve Regina. 

Isaiah Ruffen, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Sr, G) - Ruffen posted two double-doubles in a 1-1 week, scoring 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds against Wheaton before collecting 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Saints 72-71 victory over Dean. 

Randall Ferdinand, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Sr., F - Pembroke Pines, Fla.) - Averaged 15.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 64.3% (18-28 FG) overall. He produced a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds against #20 John Carroll before notching 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds versus Brooklyn. 

Stefan Masciarelli, Lasell (Jr., G - Northbridge, Mass.) - Averaged 28.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists (4.3 turnovers) in Lasell's 1-2 week while shooting 46.7% (35-75 FG). He scored 34 points and grabbed six boards in a non-conference win over Regis before tallying 25 points in a loss to Babson. He finished the week with 27 points (10-17 FG) and four assists in a road loss at Nichols.

Christopher Bryant, Norwich (So., F - Crestview, Fla.) - Put up back to back double-doubles averaging 15.0 points and 13.5 rebounds over Norwich's 1-1 week. Went for 12 points, 16 rebounds against Plymouth State on Tuesday night on 55.6% shooting from the field. Followed that up with an 18 point, 11 rebound performance against Lesley on Saturday, shooting 70% from the field.

Ademola Afonja, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., F - Staten Island, N.Y.) - In a four-game week, Afonja averaged 16.8 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 50% (29-58 FG) in just 26.8 minutes per game. He registered matching 21-point, seven-rebound outings in the Pride's two victories last week: at Curry on Tuesday (in just 22 minutes) and at Sarah Lawrence on Sunday. 

Mike Sagay, St. Joseph (Conn.) (So., F - Bloomfield, Conn.) - Sagay exploded for a game-high 36 points on 14-of-18 (77.8%) shooting from the floor, including 3-of-6 from threewith nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks in 28 minutes to propel the Blue Jays to a 99-78 victory over Green Mountain on Saturday in their lone game of the week. The 36 points sets the benchmark for most points in a game in program history.

Jack Casale, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (So., G - Portland, Maine) - Casale continued his hot start to 2018-19 by averaging 23.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists in a 2-1 week. The sophomore tallied 25 points and eight assists in an 89-79 win over Thomas on Tuesday before double-doubling with 24 points and 13 rebounds in an 88-83 loss to Tufts on Friday. He closed out the week with 21 points, eight boards and five dimes in an 88-70 victory over Anna Maria on Saturday. He shot 43.4% (23-53) overall, 45.5% (10-22) from three and 82.4% (14-17) from the FT line. 

Thomas Duffy, Suffolk (Jr., G - Fairfield, Conn.) - Duffy averaged 22.0 points on 49% (25-51 FG, 5-20 3PT, 11-14 FT) in a 1-2 week, highlighted by a 39-point effort on 14-of-25 shooting (5-13 3PT) in a narrow 94-91 overtime loss on Sunday at Maine-Farmington.
