GNAC Field Hockey Report: Week 10

PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Emily Plummer, Simmons (Sophomore, F - San Diego, Calif.)
 
After posting no points in the regular-season finale against Lasell, the sophomore scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-3 GNAC First Round double-overtime victory over JWU on Saturday. 

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Hope Winkin, Regis (Mass.) (Jr., GK - Winslow, Maine)

Winkin kept Regis in front in both matches of a 2-0 week, helping Regis qualify for the GNAC Tournament before earning a first-round road win. Against JWU in the regular-season finale, she made five of her seven saves within the final three minutes of the second period to keep the Wildcats off the board in the first half. She stopped seven of nine shots overall for the 4-2 road win. On Saturday, she tied the Regis single-season record with her sixth shutout of the season, making two saves as Regis defeated Anna Maria, 1-0, to advance to the league semifinals. The junior captain has cut her goals against average in half this season as she has played every second of every match in net for the Pride. For the week, she stopped nine of 11 shots for a .818 save percentage.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sheridan Blaha, Regis (Mass.) (Fr., F - Waltham, Mass.)
 
Blaha continues to expand upon her school single-season records as the Pride extended their winning streak to five matches, scoring two goals in a 2-0 week, including the crucial tally in a 1-0 road GNAC Tournament win on Saturday. First on Wednesday, Blaha scored one minute into the second period to increase the Regis lead to 2-0. On Saturday against third-seeded Anna Maria, the five-time GNAC Rookie of the Week scored the game-winner four-plus minutes into the period. Blaha led the team with six total shots, including five shots on goal as Regis controlled play for most of the contest. 

WEEK 10 HONOR ROLL 

Jillian Miele, Johnson & Wales (RI) (So., F - Wilmington, Mass.) - Miele inked her name in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record books in Johnson & Wales' GNAC quarterfinal match on the road against Simmons University on Saturday. Against the Sharks, Miele became the first sophomore to score three goals in tough, 4-3 double-overtime loss to the Sharks. 
 
Ashley Chipman, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., F - Stoughton, Mass.) - Chipman continues to lead the Pride as they won two more matches over the past week to extend their season. Wednesday at Johnson & Wales, she scored the first goal of the match to help Regis establish the lead. With the Pride ahead by just one heading into the fourth period, she picked up the assist on an insurance goal off a penalty corner as Regis clinched a spot in the GNAC Tournament with a 4-2 victory. It was her second straight match with a goal and an assist. Saturday, she once again helped Regis run its plays offensively as the Pride earned 11 penalty corners, plus she helped the defense to its sixth shutout of the season to advance to the tournament semifinals. 
 
Alexandra Belaire, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Junior, D - Greene, Maine) - Belaire scored a beautiful goal off a penalty corner with an aerial shot to the top right corner and added an assist in the Monks' 4-2 victory at Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday.
 
Sophia Jacques, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Freshman, M - Peru, Maine) - Jacques scored a goal and was credited with an assist in the Monks' 4-2 victory at Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday.
 
Lucy McNamara, Simmons (Junior, GK - Brewster, Mass.) - In two matches, the junior posted a .800 save percentage after making 20 saves with double-digit save totals in both games. The keeper also owned a 2.27 goals against average in 132:16 minutes of action. McNamara stopped 10 of 12 shots in a 2-0 loss at Lasell University on October 30, before capping the week with 10 more saves in a double-overtime 4-3 win in 72:16 of action vs. Johnson & Wales University in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Quarterfinals on November 2.
