GNAC Men's Volleyball Report: Week 8

( FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 11-17 )

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Khaynen Yocca, Rivier (Sr, MH - Pittsburgh, Pa.)

In a 2-0 week against the GNAC's top competition, the Raiders picked up wins over Wentworth and JWU on Saturday afternoon to remain the only undefeated team in league play. The senior middle hitter hit an even .500 en route to an average of 2.44 kills per set, registering 13 kills on 22 attempts (.455) in a 3-2 win at Wentworth to go with seven digs and five blocks. Later in the day, he followed up with nine kills on 14 tries (.571) in a four-set victory over JWU. She also averaged 0.78 blocks per set for the Raiders. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Alex Silva, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Sr, MH - Jamaica Plain, Mass.)

Silva averaged 1.70 blocks per set to control net play for the Saints in a 3-0 week. The senior set the tone early with six total blocks in a 3-0 victory over Emerson and followed it up with a huge nine-block outing in a 3-1 victory over Lasell. Silva added 2.30 kills and 0.80 digs per set on the unblemished week. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Kostea Andreenko, Regis (Mass.) (So., MB - Marstons Mills, Mass.)

In a three-game week, Andreenko averaged 2.22 kills, 0.33 service aces and 1.00 blocks per set, while hitting an impressive .429. On Tuesday in a 3-0 win at Bard, he was a perfect 7-for-7 in attack attempts and earned five total blocks in just two sets. On Saturday against Lasell, he once again picked up seven kills, three blocks and two digs before finishing with six kills, two service aces against Emmanuel. 


WEEK 8 HONOR ROLL
Erik English, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Sr, OH - Simi Valley, Calif.) - English averaged 3.80 kills (.198), 2.50 digs and 1.10 service aces per set to power Emmanuel to a 3-0 record in GNAC action. English was a force in a tri-match sweep over Lasell and Regis, combining for 31 kills in the wins. The senior added 11 aces in the victories and now has 60 on the year to both lead the GNAC and all of Division III in total aces. In the Regis victory, he hit a spectacular .414 to average 5.67 kills per set in the sweep. 

Nick Bitetto, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Sr., OH - East Northport, N.Y.) - Averaged 3.13 digs per set in a 1-1 day on Saturday, notching 13 digs versus Rivier and 12 more in a 3-1 win at Wentworth. The 13 digs versus the Raiders was a season-high. 

Sanjae Holloway, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Jr., OH - East Hartford, Conn.) - Holloway averaged 3.75 kills, 2.00 digs and 0.75 blocks in a 1-1 week, which included an impressive 3-1 victory at Wentworth. He had a career-high 18 kills as well as nine digs and three blocks in the win over the Leopards, which broke a 14-game losing streak versus Wentworth. He also had otched 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks versus Rivier. He hit .385 for the week, including .432 against WIT. 

Drew Beimel, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., RS - Redondo Beach, Calif.) - Beimel averaged 3.43 kills and 2.11 digs while hitting .254 in a 1-2 week. He hit .667 in a 3-0 sweep at Bard on Tuesday before registering 10 and 14 kills, respectively, in setbacks against Lasell and Emmanuel in a GNAC trimatch on Saturday.
