GNAC Baseball Report: Week 5

( FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 25-31 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK 

Joe Maracic, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Jr., INF - Syosset, N.Y.)

Maracic slashed .667/.688/.867 in a 3-1 week, going 10-for-15 with three doubles, nine runs, 10 RBI and one stolen base for a 1.555 OPS. He helped lead JWU to a crucial doubleheader sweep over GNAC rival Saint Joseph's of Maine, going 4-for-5 with four runs and four RBI in the Game One walkoff victory.  He also had a pair of three-hit, three-RBI performances in both a 16-15 setback at Salem State and a 20-7 victory over Wentworth. 

PITCHER OF THE WEEK 

Worth Walrod, Suffolk (Sr., P - Dedham, Mass.)

Walrod posted a 0.00 ERA over 9.0 innings of work for the Rams, striking out 11 and walking just two. He threw two hitless innings of relief in a 6-5 win over Western New England before allowing just six hits to go with eight strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game victory in an 11-0 victory over Albertus Magnus on Saturday. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Corey Cochran, Rivier (Fr, P/OF - Salem, N.H.)

Cochran was impressive over the six game week for the Raiders. He went 5-for-6 in the two non-conference victories over Maine-Presque Isle, including a perfect 2-for-2 in game one, and also pitched in the 8-7 loss to Norwich. On the mound he tossed 3.2 innings allowing zero earned runs (seven runs allowed) on six hits. 


WEEK 5 HONOR ROLL
Josh Mousseau, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Sr., P - Woonsocket, R.I.) - Limited Saint Joseph's to just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts to complete the GNAC sweep of the Monks, throwing his second straight GNAC complete game.

Zach Handzel, Lasell (Jr., P - Palmer, Mass.) - Posted a 2-0 record with a pair of complete-game wins, a 1.93 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 14 innings. He allowed just two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in a GNAC win over Colby-Sawyer, striking out 10 batters in seven innings, and he surrendered two runs on eight hits and no walks in a GNAC win over Anna Maria, striking out three.

Evan Michalek, Lasell (Sr., OF - Berlin, Conn.) - Batted .385 (5-of-13) in a 4-2 week for Lasell (3-1 GNAC) with a double, three runs scored, four RBI, and four stolen bases. He went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases and two runs scored in a doubleheader split against Colby-Sawyer, and he went 3-for-6 with a double and three RBI in a doubleheader sweep against Anna Maria. His two-run double in the opener put Lasell ahead 3-2 and proved to be the game-winning hit.

Jake Ryan, Norwich (Sr., P - Arlington, Mass.) - Ryan was masterful on the mound, allowing just one run (unearned) on three hits and two walks in six innings of work against Rivier on Saturday. He struck out seven batters, setting a new career high, and improved to 1-3 on the season.

Kyle Flanagan, Rivier (Sr, P - Bradford, Mass.) - Flanagan was superb in his final start of the week - a complete-game four hit shutout against Maine-Preque Isle. The veteran right-handed struck out nine and did not issue a walk while earning his first win of the season. In his first start of the week, Flanagan surrendered two earned runs and recieved the loss in the team's 7-2 setback to Pine Manor. In that contest he tossed six innings allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out five. 

Fred Kazalski, Rivier (So, OF - Dracut, Mass.) - Kazalski enjoyed another fine week for the Raiders as he went 7-for-18 (.389 average) with five RBI and recorded hits in five of the six games. He went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the team's 10-4 win against UMPI while also knocking in three RBI in game one of the double-header sweep. Kazalski also collected three hits in the two GNAC losses to Norwich and picked up a base knock and RBI against Pine Manor. 

Joey Murphy, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Senior, SS - Derry, N.H.) - Murphy hit .471 (8-17) with three runs and eight stolen bases in five games for the Monks last week. 

Blase Cormier, Suffolk (So., 1B - Wayland, Mass.) - Cormier slashed .550/.524/.900 in a perfect 5-0 week, going 11-for-20 with five doubles, a triple, seven runs scored and nine RBI. He had a pair of three-hit games on the week and had three RBI in each doubleheader victory over Albertus Magnus on Saturday. In a sweep of Colby-Sawyer on Sunday, he was 3-for-8 with three runs and three RBI.
