GNAC Men's Basketball Report: Week 11

( FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 27 - FEBRUARY 2 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

EJ Day, Lasell (So., G - Norwalk, Conn.)

Day averaged 37.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in a 2-0 week for Lasell, shooting 62.5% from the field (20-32), 44.5% from three-point range (5-11), and 83.3% from the FT line (30-36). He poured in a career-high 45 points (12-16 FG, 5-7 3PT, 16-20 FT) with seven rebounds and six assists in a 99-76 GNAC victory over Regis. He followed up by scoring 30 points (8-16 FG, 0-4 3PT, 14-16 FT) in an 88-80 GNAC triumph over Rivier. Day is averaging 26.3 points in his eight games with the Lasers, shooting 52.3% from the field, including 30.4 points per game and 51.7% shooting against GNAC opponents.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

 

Cam Wilkins, Regis (Mass.) (Fr., G - Taunton, Mass.)

Wilkins made significant contributions during the past week for Regis, averaging 17.0 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting an impressive 71.4% (15-21) from the floor. On Wednesday at Lasell, he shot 6-of-8 from the field on his way to a 15-point performance. On Saturday against Emmanuel, one of the top teams in the GNAC, he led the Pride with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting, to go with five rebounds. It is his second-highest scoring output of the season and the first time he has reached double figures in consecutive games since a stretch of four straight games with 10 or more points from Nov. 26 through Dec. 4. For the season, Wilkins is shooting 64.6 percent from the field. 


WEEK 11 HONOR ROLL

Tyreek Perkins, Albertus Magnus (Jr., G - New Haven, Conn.) - Perkins averaged 17.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in an 0-2 week for Albertus, while shooting an impressive 66.7% from the field (10-15), 75% (3-4) from three, and 91.7% (11-12) from the FT line. He led the Falcons in the loss to USJ (CT) with 22 points, three assists, three steals and a rebound before dropping 12 points and four rebounds in the loss to Suffolk. 

Marcus Fox, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Jr, F - Danbury, Conn.) - Fox shot a stellar 65.4% (17-26 FG, 4-7 3PT, 9-12 FT) to help Emmanuel go 2-0, averaging 23.5 points and 8.5 boards in 29.0 minutes per game. Fox opened the stanza with a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double over Anna Maria in a 95-82 win before dropping 23 points while grabbing six boards in a 95-79 "W" over Regis.

Emmett Riddick, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Sr, G - Middletown, Conn.) - Riddick played a big part in Emmanuel's 2-0 week, averaging 25.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 44.1% (15-34 FG, 7-12 3PT, 14-16 FT). The senior opened the week with a season-high 29 points outing in a 95-82 win over Anna Maria, moving into third place all-time in scoring at Emmanuel with the effort. He closed the week one rebound shy of a double-double with 22 points and nine boards in a 95-79 victory over Regis to help EC improve to 16-3 on the year.

Caleb Casinas, Norwich (So., G - Aiea, Hawaii) - Casinas continued his upward trajectory this season by averaging 22.0 points while shooting 48.3% (14-29 Fg, 5-14 3PT, 11-13 FT) overall and added 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in a 1-1 week. On Wednesday, Casinas tallied 15 points and eight boards while handing out four assists in a tough loss to Colby-Sawyer. He demonstrated his ceiling on Saturday in an upset of Saint Joseph's (ME) netting a career-best 29 points, including 11 of the team's 17 straight points to end the game and the game-winning bucket. He was the main catalyst in powering the Cadets back from a 14-point deficit with just 3.44 remaining to capture the 77-74 win. With the game in the balance, Casinas was perfect from the field and the free-throw line and assisted on the only other two made field goals down the stretch.

Marc Trinidad, Regis (Mass.) (Jr., F - Bronx, N.Y.) - Trinidad averaged 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in 24.5 minutes per game last week for the Pride. At Lasell Wednesday night, he finished with 11 points and nine rebounds before collecting 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks on Saturday against Emmanuel, he. Trinidad has scored 10 or more points in all but one game so far this season and is sixth in the GNAC in rebounding (9.1), eighth in FG percentage (.545), and 14th in scoring (15.4). 

Issaiah Chappell, Rivier (Sr., Sunapee, N.H.) - Chappell averaged 30.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals while shooting 51% (24-47) overall in a two-game week for the Raiders. He scored 35 points on Saturday on the road at Lasell.

Jaecee Martin, St. Joseph (Conn.) (So., G - Hartford, Conn.) - Martin averaged 22.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting 48.3% (14-29 FG, 2-3 3PT, 15-18 FT) in a 2-0 road week, which included a key victory over GNAC foe and nationally-ranked Albertus Magnus. He had 16 points, eight boards and six assists in the win over the Falcons before going off for 29 points, six rebounds and nine assists in an 81-65 win at Johnson & Wales. 

Jordan Powell, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Jr., G/F - Middletown, Conn.) - Powell shot an astounding 87% from the floor, connecting on 20-of-23 shots in a 2-0 week, which featured victories over GNAC powers Albertus and Johnson & Wales. He had 22 points and 10 rebounds in both contests, going a perfect 10-of-10 from the field in the win over the Falcons before going 10-of-13 on Saturday in a road win over JWU. 

Nicholas Curtis, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (2022, G - Windham, Maine) - Curtis averaged 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a 1-1 week, highlighted by a 28-point, seven-board, seven-assist performance in a tough 77-74 road loss to Norwich on Saturday.

Alex Jacovides, Suffolk (Jr., G - Tampa, Fla.) - The junior heated up for 10 points on 3-of-4 from three-point range and 1-of-2 from the FT line to go with three boards in just 13 minutes of action as Suffolk knocked off nationally-ranked Albertus Magnus, 81-68, On Satuday.
