Monks & Wildcats Play to Scoreless Tie

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – Saint Joseph's College (8-4-3, 4-4-3 GNAC) and Johnson & Wales University (5-11-2, 4-6-2 GNAC) battled to a scoreless stalemate in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer match on Tuesday afternoon. Monks junior netminder Jaci Lorenzen (Windham, Maine) made three saves in the conference deadlock.

Johnson & Wales held a 6-2 advantage in shots during the first half, but the Monks managed to put both of their bids on target, including a shot by senior Casey Monaghan (Portland, Maine) in the 31st minute that was stopped by Wildcats freshmen keeper Alexa Rose (Lancaster, Pa.) to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.  Each team had their chances in the second half, but neither could capitalize as regulation ended in the 0-0 tie.

In the first overtime period, JWU freshman Alyson Marsden (Ferndale, Pa.) had a scoring chance, but Lorenzen was up to the challenge for St. Joe's and kept the game scoreless.  In the second overtime stanza, SJC freshman Megen Pollini (Wolfeboro, N.H.) had one last shot, but Rose again made the save to end the game in the 0-0 tie.  Rose made five saves for JWU.

Overall, Saint Joseph's held a narrow 14-13 lead in shots while Johnson & Wales earned a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon. Both sides committed 14 fouls in what was the Wildcats' 2012 season finale.

With the result, Saint Joseph's is now 1-2-4 in the history of the series with Johnson & Wales University  and has earned a tie with the Wildcats in back to back meetings, as the GNAC rivals played to a 2-2 stalemate last fall. The total of four ties is the most the Monks have versus any opponent in the history of the women's soccer program. St. Joe's has the same amount of ties against Maine-Farmington.

Saint Joseph's will host Lasell College on Thursday at 3:00 PM in the final GNAC regular season game of the season.
