GNAC Softball Athlete of the Week Report #5

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mady Lyons, Johnson & Wales (Jr., C)

Junior Mady Lyons posted an astounding .643% average with nine RBI's in four games for the Wildcats. The Prior Lake, Minn. natives best performance came against Dean in doubleheader action as she went 8-for-9 with two home runs and eight RBI in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday to give the Wildcats an undefeated week.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Piper Kinney, Simmons (Jr., P)

Junior Piper Kinney struck out 21 batters for the Sharks, going 2-1 on the week. In a midweek doubleheader against Framingham State, Kinney struck out nine batters then earned her fourth win of the season, tossing 1.2 innings of relief in game two, while fanning three Rams. Against Thomas (Me.), the Marlborough, Mass. native took a near-perfect game into the fifth inning before allowing two baserunners on back-to-back fielding errors before finishing the game by striking out nine opposing batters for the second time in the week and collecting a no-hitter. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Karla Carangelo, Albertus Magnus (Fr., P/OF)

First-year Karla Carangelo scored a run in five of six Falcons games during the week (4-2) as the Chesire, Conn. native averaged 500/.833/.571 with three extra base hits for five RBI's including a homer against USJ. Carangelo also collected four K's in two games of relief work (2.1 innings pitched).


WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

Colleen Edwards, Albertus Magnus - Drove in eight runs in GNAC play over the weekend and hit first career homer against USJ as she batted .529 (9-for-17) for the Falcons.

Annabelle Jabs, Albertus Magnus - Collected two wins in conference play (2-1 overall), totaling 19 strikeouts on the week with 15 coming from GNAC play while posting a 1.21 earned run average.

Katie Scheid, Johnson & Wales - Went 2-0 with a 0.58 earned run average for the Wildcats, who moved to 4-0 in GNAC play. She held Regis to one earned run over seven in a win on Friday, then tossed a one-hit shutout against Dean on Sunday to improve to 6-4 on the season. She fanned six batters and walked just two.

Alyssa Bland, Lasell - Went 7-for-13 (.538) and tagged home five times while stealing 10 bases across a 2-2 week for Lasell.

Abigail Grimes, New England College - Hit .667% for the 'Grims this week, with four hits, three doubles and three RBI to lead NEC to a split at Albertus Magnus.

Maren McGinn, Norwich - Was a two-way force for the Cadets in their twin bill against VTSU Lyndon. At the plate, she slashed .571/.571/1.143 with eight total bases, highlighted by a game two home run. In the circle she shut down the Hornets allowing two hits and a run in five combined innings of work earning a win in game one.

Charlotte Cloutier, Saint Joseph's (Maine) - Led the Monks to a 2-0 week after plating four hits in seven at-bats, collecting four RBI's.

Raya Anderson, Simmons - Guided the Sharks to a 2-1 week, posting a .667% batting average. In a midweek doubleheader, Anderson gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead launching her fourth career homerun then went two-for-four with a double and a run scored in a 9-6 in game two and closed out the week leading the Sharks' offense to a 9-0 shutout against Thomas College with a two-for-two performance, including two triples and three runs scored from the top of the lineup.
