GNAC Men's Soccer Report: Week 6

( FOR THE WEEK OF SEPT. 30 - OCT. 6 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

JP Rioux, Johnson & Wales (RI) (So., F - Stony Point, N.Y.)

Three goals by Rioux helped Johnson & Wales remain perfect in conference action following victories over Lasell and Colby-Sawyer. Midway through the week after the Wildcats allowed a Laser goal within the first minute, Rioux scored the equalizer in the fifth minute on a feed from Austin Sweeney and set off a chain of three unanswered goals the Wildcats. The Stony Point, N.Y. native sealed the match with his second goal of the game in the 51st minute. Rioux closed out the week scoring the game-winner against the Chargers in the 24th minute on a through ball from Riley Spottori.

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Ivan Ramirez, Regis (Mass.) (So., GK - San Juan, Puerto Rico)

Ramirez did not allow a goal from the opposing team in two starts over the past week, as the only goal was an own goal put in by Regis defender. Thursday against preseason favorite Saint Joseph's of Maine, he collected a career-high eight saves in the narrow 1-0 loss. On Saturday, he started against Anna Maria and made five saves, including three saves in the first 12 minutes to keep the match scoreless before the Pride offense erupted in a 4-0 win. He stopped 13 shots on the week en route to a 0.67 goals-against average.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sunjoon Tenorio, Suffolk (Fr., F - Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands)

Tenorio anchored Suffolk to a 1-1 week. He started the action with a career-high two-goal effort in a 6-2 triumph at Anna Maria before assisting on the Rams' lone goal in a 3-1 setback to Emmanuel.

WEEK 6 HONOR ROLL

Robert Danielian, Emmanuel (Mass.) (So, F - Watertown, Mass.) - Danielian scored in back-to-back games for Emmanuel, leading the Saints to a 2-0 week in GNAC action. The sophomore forward netted the game-winning tally in a 2-0 win at Rivier and followed it up by scoring EC's first goal in a 3-1 victory over intra-city rival Suffolk in a 3-1 victory.

Kyle King, Emmanuel (Mass.) (So, F - Gorham, Maine) - King powered Emmanuel to a 2-0 week in GNAC play, collecting five points on two goals and one assist. The forward dished out the helper on the game-winning goal in a 2-0 road victory over Rivier before scoring two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-1 road win at Suffolk.

Alex Brannan, Norwich (So., M - Oneonta, N.Y.) - Brannan scored the game-winning goal as time expired to lift Norwich to a huge 3-2 road victory over previously league unbeaten USJ. Brannan blistered a free-kick from 30 yards out into the top right corner of the net to give the Cadets the win. The goal was Brannan's first of the season and he leads the GNAC with six assists on the year.

Charles Mputu, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Fr., M - Hartford, Conn.) - Mputu had a breakout week for the Blue Jays with four points which featured his first career goal to go along with a pair of assists in a 1-1 week for USJ. Mputu logged a pair of assists in a 4-0 midweek non-conference victory at home over Mitchell on Wednesday, before netting the first goal of his career on Saturday at home versus GNAC foe Norwich. In the 64th minute versus the Cadets, it looked like Mputu would pick up his third assist of the week after a well-played ball to classmate Michael Torres inside the box, but Torres' shot caromed off the crossbar. Mputu followed his pass and his hustle would be rewarded as he was there for the rebound and brilliantly finished with a diving header into the back of the net for his first career marker.
