GNAC Men's Soccer Report: Week 5

( FOR THE WEEK OF SEPT. 23 - 29 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nick Gutekunst, Johnson & Wales (RI) (So., M - East Northport, N.Y.)

Gutekunst led JWU with two goals and an assist for five points in a 3-0 week, which included keeping its perfect record against GNAC opponents following a 2-0 shutout against Rivier on Friday. Early in the week, he scored the game-winner with under three minutes remaining in regulation against in-state rival RIC. Against the Raiders Friday evening, Gutekunst kept the Wildcat record flawless registering the game-winner with two minutes remaining in the first half. He closed out the week with connecting with teammate Erik Schneider on another game-winning goal in the 52nd minute against another in-state rival Salve Regina to push the Wildcats' win streak to five. 

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Steven Lopez, Suffolk (Sr., GK - East Boston, Mass.)
 
In his second-ever start, Lopez had a standout performance against Norwich, stopping all 12 shots he faced to shut out the Cadets and backstop the Rams to their first win over its Vermont conference competitor since 2011. In a 1-1 week overall, he stopped 15 of 17 shots for a .882 save percentage across 135:00 of action. 
 
 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Alec Erskine, Emmanuel (Mass.) (So, M - Coventry, Conn.)

Erskine lifted Emmanuel to a 2-0 week, collecting five points on two goals and one assist. The sophomore netted the game-winner in Emmanuel's 3-1 victory over Wentworth while also adding an assist in the non-conference win before closing out the week with the game-winning goal in a 2-0 GNAC win over Regis.


WEEK 5 HONOR ROLL

Amerle Nemeye, Norwich (So., M - Burlington, Vt.) - Nemeye scored three goals to lead Norwich to a 2-1 record on the week. Nemeye scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's 2-1 victory over Elms, as he provided all the offense with both tallies in the non-conference victory. Nemeye also scored in a 2-0 win over Anna Maria on Saturday. Nemeye managed to get off 22 shots (eight on goal) in the three contests.
 
Fabyanno Furbino, Regis (Mass.) (Jr., F - Port St. Lucie, Fla.) - As part of a 1-1 week, Furbino helped Regis snap a three-match losing streak with a victory at Dean College Wednesday, scoring his first two goals of the season to give the Pride an early lead. The first goal came with just 11:30 elapsed from the contest, with the second one tallied less than 12 minutes later. He took a season-high five shots against the Bulldogs, including three on net.
 
DeAnte Anderson, St. Joseph (Conn.) (So., F - Bloomfield, Conn.) - The reigning GNAC Player of the Week scored three more goals in a 1-1 week that featured a 5-0 victory over GNAC opponent Colby-Sawyer at home on Saturday to keep the Blue Jays undefeated on the year in GNAC play at 3-0-0. Anderson was instrumental in the win over the Chargers by netting a first-half hat trick. The 6-1 Bloomfield product got Saint Joseph on the board early with his first goal of the game in the 19th minute. He then successfully converted a PK in the 36th minute before beating the first-half clock and curling in a shot with seven seconds left to give the Blue Jays a commanding 4-0 lead. It marks the third hat trick by a USJ player this season and the first career hat trick for Anderson, who has scored seven goals over his last five games.
 
Niko DeCola, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Freshman, F - Mahopac, N.Y.) - DeCola scored the first two goals of his collegiate career in the Monks' 6-0 victory at Suffolk University on Saturday.
 
Kuma Onyejose, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Sophomore, F - East Greenwich, R.I.) - Onyejose scored a pair of goals in the Monks' 6-0 victory at Suffolk on Saturday.
  
Sunjoon Tenorio, Suffolk (Fr., F - Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) - Tenorio  lifted Suffolk to 1-0 victory over Norwich, the Rams' first victory over the Cadets since 2011. The rookie potted the game winner – his second of the season – with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
