GNAC Men's Soccer Report: Week 4

( FOR THE WEEK OF SEPT. 16-22 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DeAnte Anderson, St. Joseph (Conn.) (So., F - Bloomfield, Conn.)

Anderson had a huge week for USJ exploding for an eight-point week en route to helping lead the Blue Jays to a perfect 2-0 record highlighted by a 10-0 triumph over GNAC opponent Lasell at home on Saturday. Anderson netted three goals and assisted on two others over the two-game span with the game-winning goal on Wednesday in a 4-1 victory at Becker. Anderson factored in both games on the week with two goals and an assist on Wednesday versus the Hawks before adding a goal and an assist on Saturday in the big GNAC win over Lasell.

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Robert Wagenseller, Norwich (Fr., GK - Poway, Calif.)

Wagenseller went 2-0 on the week, backstopping Norwich to wins vs. Castleton and Emmanuel. He stopped five shots in a 3-1 win over Castleton and then added four more saves in a team shutout vs. Emmanuel on Friday. Wagenseller leads the GNAC in save percentage and is second in goals against average. 

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Joseph Thongsythavong, Norwich (Fr., F - Salem, Mass.)

Thongsythavong continued his breakout rookie season, scoring four goals, including two game-winning goals to lead Norwich to a 2-0 week with wins over Castleton and Emmanuel. Thongsythavong scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win over Castleton on Tuesday, he then tallied a hat trick vs. Emmanuel to help the Cadets finally beat the Saints for the first time in four regular season matchups. Thongsythavong is tied for the GNAC scoring lead with eight goals on the season.  


WEEK 4 HONOR ROLL

Hezekiah Adeyeye, Anna Maria (Fr., M - Woonsocket, Mass.) - Adyeye continued his strong freshman season with two goals and an assist for five points in helping the AMCATS to a 2-1 week. In a 3-1 win over NVU-Johnson, Adeyeye tallied one goal that tied the contest at the time. In a 2-1 win over Rivier, Adeyeye got Anna Maria off to a quick 1-0 lead and later assisted on the game-winning goal from a nicely placed corner kick. 

JP Rioux, Johnson & Wales (RI) (So., F - Stony Point, N.Y.) - Rioux led Johnson & Wales to a 2-0 week after registering three goals and one assist for seven points. He scored twice, including the game-winner in the fourth minute of the Wildcats' third shutout of the season, in a 3-0 road win over non-conference Plymouth State. In Johnson & Wales' conference opener against Suffolk on Saturday afternoon, Rioux ignited the Wildcat offense finding the back of the net against the Rams in the 21st minute and also had an assist in the 4-1 victory.

Austin Scoggin, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Jr., GK - Cutchogue, N.Y.) - Scoggin led Johnson & Wales to a 2-0 week which included opening conference play at 1-0 with a convincing win over Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon. Early in the week against non-conference Plymouth State, Scoggin recorded his conference-leading third shutout of the season following a 3-0 win. In the Wildcats' conference opener against Suffolk, Scoggin allowed just one goal to the Rams, while recording three saves. 

Noah Robinson, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Senior, D - Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) - Robinson scored a pair of goals in the Monks' 4-0 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Saturday.

Mergim Kutllovci, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Fr., M - Thomaston, Conn.) - Kutllovci erupted for a five-point week to help the Blue Jays to a 2-0 week that featured a 10-0 route of GNAC opponent Lasell on Saturday at home. Kutllovci, who has been a consistent scoring threat all season for the Blue Jays, continued to show off his speed and technical skills and put two shots past Lasell's keeper on Saturday and assisted on another to account for his five-point week. Kutllovci netted what would be the game-winner when he scored in the 23rd minute to give USJ an early 1-0 in the eventual 10-0 triumph. The 5-6 rookie from Thomaston then found the back of the net to start the second half in the 49th minute to extend the Blue Jays' lead to 6-0 before assisting on USJ's ninth goal of the game in 69th minute. Kutllovci is currently second on the team in points with 11 (5 G, 1 A).
