GNAC Women's Volleyball Report: Week 3

(FOR THE WEEK OF SEPT. 9 - 15)

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Maria Coniglio, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Sr., OH - Old Bethpage, N.Y.)

Coniglio guided No. 5 JWU to a 3-0 week and extended the Wildcat win streak to seven games, averaging 3.09 kills, 3.45 digs and 0.45 aces per set while posting a .357 (34-9-70) attack percentage. Additionally, she registered her second and third double-doubles of the season. Tallying 10 kills and 19 digs in a 3-1 win over Springfield on Friday, Coniglio followed up with a 13-kill, 16-dig match performance in a 3-1 victory over Stevens on Saturday. Coniglio also led a Wildcat team that committed only three attack errors in the first two sets against the Ducks. 

LIBERO OF THE WEEK

Elyssa Nicolas, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Jr., DS - San Francisco, Calif.)

Nicolas helped lead No. 5 Johnson & Wales to a 3-0 week, tallying 60 digs (5.45 per set), 11 kills and five aces. Ranked in the top-100 in the nation in digs, Nicolas tied her season-high recording 29 digs in a 3-1 win over Stevens on Saturday. She was also solid from the service line, registering a season-best three aces in a 3-0 shutout of in-state rival Roger Williams. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sarah Farnum, Norwich (Fr., RS - North Andover, Mass.)

Farnum paced Norwich to a 2-1 record for the week by averaging 10.11 assists and 1.89 digs per set. She notched a career-high 41 assists in a 3-0 win over Mount Holyoke and also had 24 helpers in a 3-0 sweep of Salem State and registered 26 in a setback to Plymouth State. 


WEEK 3 HONOR ROLL

Jesselle Guzman, Albertus Magnus (Sr., LB - El Paso, Texas) - Guzman was fantastic for Albertus this past week, recording 63 digs (5.73/set) and six service aces in a trio of matches. The senior's shining performance came in a five-set match against Suffolk on Saturday, when she tallied a career-high 36 digs to go along with five aces. She also did well in the Falcons' lone win of the week, posting 15 digs in a 3-0 victory over Dean. 

Naarah Cox, Colby-Sawyer (Sr, MB - Boston, Mass.) - Cox led the Chargers on both sides of the net with 3.16 kills per set on .243 hitting and 0.84 blocks per set. In a 4-1 week for the Chargers, Cox led all players in each of the five matches in kills. She began the week with 14 kills, seven digs and four blocks in a tough 3-1 loss to Keene State. Cox followed with 13 kills on .478 hitting in a 3-0 sweep of Salem State. Her highest kill total of the week came in a 3-2 comeback win over UMass Dartmouth. She followed with 12 kills, six digs and five blocks in a 3-1 GNAC win over the University of Saint Joseph. Cox ended the week with a modest six kills, but led all players, and hit .385 in a 3-0 win over UMPI.

Kiana Perez Diaz, Lasell (So., OH - Juncos, Puerto Rico) - Averaged 3.94 kills, 1.19 service aces and 2.81 digs per set in four matches last week, including 5.13 kills, 1.38 aces and 2.38 digs per set in two GNAC matches. She posted a .230 overall attack percentage (63-26-161) and a .253 conference attack percentage (41-17-95). She posted two double-doubles with 21 kills and 15 digs in a match against Worcester State and 24 kills and 11 digs in a GNAC match against Suffolk.

Kathryn Farnum, Norwich (Jr., RS - North Andover, Mass.) - Farnum was a key staple in the Norwich attack as the team posted a 2-1 record this week. She hit at an impressive .310 clip while averaging 4.22 kills per set. Farnum tied a career-high with 18 kills against Mount Holyoke. She twice posted double-digit digs on the defensive side while averaging 3.78 digs per set. She also added six service aces and two total blocks to her weekly totals. 

Katryna Veasey, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., OH - Quincy, Mass.) -  Veasey averaged 3.00 kills (.198), 2.57 digs and 0.79 blocks per set in a 2-2 week. In Tuesday's five-set victory over NEC, Veasey led the Pride with 17 kills, plus she earned a season-high seven service aces without committing a service error. Defensively, she collected a season-high 16 digs and a career-high nine total blocks. In Thursday's sweep over Bridgewater State, she finished with eight kills and nine digs. After picking up seven kills against Western New England Saturday, she earned 10 kills, seven digs, and two total blocks against Smith. 

Morgan Weeg, Simmons (Junior, OH - Goodyear, Ariz.) - In 15 sets over four matches, the junior averaged 3.87 kills per set on a .187 hitting mark to go with eight total digs and two total block assists. The outside hitter was one of the Sharks' most consistent players, spiking for either 14 or 15 digs in every match during the week. Weeg put down 14 kills and picked up a pair of digs in a four-set win over University of Massachusetts Boston on September 11. She came back the next day to swing for 15 kills and come up with three digs in four sets at Gordon College. Weeg saved her best for last, capping the week with 14 kills on a .250 hitting mark in four sets and added two digs at Trinity College (Conn.) on September 14.. The West Coast native put away 15 kills and got up for two block assists in three sets vs. University of Southern Maine to finish a 4-0 week for the Sharks.

Kenzley Bell, Suffolk (Fr., S - Lake Park, Ga.) - Bell was all over the hardwood in a 3-1 week for Suffolk, which included a pair of 3-2 GNAC triumphs over Lasell and Albertus Magnus. In four matches and 16 sets played, the rookie assembled 4.69 dps, 3.88 assists per set and 0.44 aces per set. The Lake Park, Georgia native, saved the best performance for last with a 25-dig, 22-handout effort against the Falcons. In that five-set thriller, she was one kill away from a triple double as she registered a career-best nine. 

Hannah Fabiano, Suffolk (Jr., OH - Litchfield, N.H.) - Fabiano contributed on both sides of the net to help Suffolk to a 3-1 week, , which finished with an exclamation point of back-to-back five-set thrilling GNAC wins over Lasell and Albertus Magnus. Her stat line featured 2.75 kps, 1.56 dps and 0.81 aces per set. Her standout showing came against Laser with a 16-kill, eight-dig, four-ace day.
