GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 9

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK 

Joshua Unas, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., Santa Clarita, Calif.)

Unas continued to led Regis as the Pride defeated Elms in a dual meet Saturday. In the final dual meet of his collegiate career, Unas began the day by anchoring the 200 medley relay to a convincing victory by almost 28 seconds. Unas then won the 50 breaststroke in 30.03 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.68. Unas also anchored the 800 freestyle relay as the squad posted a winning time of 8:08.72, establishing a new pool record in the process.

 

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Kerry Fleming, Simmons (Sr., Northampton, Mass.)

The senior won both individual events that she entered and helped the Sharks win a relay event in a victory over Division II Merrimack College on January 19. Fleming won the 200-yard freestyle by more than five seconds with a time of 2:00.04 and added a victory in the 100-yard freestyle by more than a second with a mark of 55.45. Fleming led off Simmons' winning 200-yard freestyle relay and helped the Sharks combine on a time of 1:43.58.

 

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK 

Steven Johnston, Husson (Fr., Hermon, Maine)

Johnston won three events and was part a winning relay squad Friday night (Jan. 18) as Husson cruised to a dual meet victory over conference foe Saint Joseph's College. He started off the night by leading off the 400 medley relay with a new school record in the 100 back with a split of 57.37 seconds, establishing a lead for his team that it would not give up by winning the event in a new school record time of 4:06.74, just four seconds faster than the program's 46-year-old record. Johnston then won the 50 breast by over a second with a personal-best time of 30.19. A few minutes later, he won the 200 back by 24 seconds with a new school record time of 2:12.51. His third victory of the evening came in the 50 fly with his third school record of the meet, winning by over two seconds with a 25.12.

 

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sarah Singleton, Simmons (Fr., Mission Hills, Calif.)

The first year won both individual events that she entered and helped Simmons win a relay event in a victory over Division II Merrimack College on January 19. The rookie began her day by winning the 400-yard individual medley by more than six seconds with a time of 4:48.50, before dominating the 200-yard butterfly by more than six seconds with a mark of 2:20.96. The first year swam the second leg of the team's 200-yard freestyle relay and helped the Sharks combine on a time of 1:43.58 for the win.

 


WEEK 9 HONOR ROLL

Kelsey Brown, Colby-Sawyer (Fr., Douglas, Mass.) Brown had an impressive week covering two meets. She began action with a pair of individual wins in the 200 FR (2:20.53) to win by almost six seconds and the 50 FLY (31.10) at Wednesday's meet against Elms and Western New England. She was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team. On Saturday against UNE, Brown set a 200 FLY record with a time of 2:26.23 to win the event and break the 13-year old mark of 2:27.00. She added two relay wins as well in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle.

Alex DiGiacomo, Norwich (Fr., Norfolk, Mass.) DiGiacomo won the 200 yard butterfly in 56.08 and the 100 yard freestyle in 50.24 against Saint Michael's College on Thursday night. On Saturday against UMASS Dartmouth, Alex won both the 50 yard freestyle in 22.85 and the 100 yard butterfly in 57.03 in a narrow loss.

Megan Duffy, Norwich (Fr., Shelton, Conn.) On Thursday night, Duffy took first in the 200 yard IM in 2:17.61 against in-state foe Saint Michael's College. She followed that effort up with wins in the 200 yard freestyle in 2:05.09,100 yard butterfly in 1:02.74 and the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:22.31 at UMASS Dartmouth on Saturday. The Cadets fell to the Purple Knights, but topped the Corsairs, 131-126.

Julia Burke, Regis (Mass.) (Fr., North Andover, Mass.) Burke was one of four Regis swimmers with two individual event victories Saturday against Elms. Burke also swam the second leg of the meet-opening 200 medley relay, helping her squad win the event in 2:00.55. She then led a 1-2-3 finish for Regis in the 50 breaststroke, winning in 34.78 seconds. Later in the meet, Burke swam the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:15.25 to lead another 1-2-3 finish for the Pride.

Sarah Leonard, Regis (Mass.) (Jr., Brockton, Mass.) Leonard was one of the leaders for Regis as it defeated Elms in Saturday's dual meet. First, she led off the 200 medley relay that won in a total time of 2:00.55. Next, she won the 50 backstroke by over three seconds with a time of 29.14 seconds, and then she posted a personal best time of 2:25.97 in the 200 individual medley, the top time in that event. Leonard capped her day by swimming the third leg of the 800 freestyle relay that broke the pool record by over a full minute with a time of 8:53.12.

Brendan Pike, Regis (Mass.) (Fr., Weymouth, Mass.)Pike continued to make a significant impact for Regis heading into the February championship meets. He first swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay that won by almost 28 seconds with a time of 1:51.95. Pike won two individual events as well, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle in a season-best time of 1:54.03 and in the 500 freestyle in 5:09.90. He concluded the day by filling the second leg of the 800 freestyle relay that set a new pool record with a time of 8:08.72.

Alirose Beauregard, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Fr., Dover, N.H.) Beauregard won the 200-Free (2:08.98) and was second in the 500-Free (5:55.36) and 50-Fly (30.98) at Husson on Friday evening.

Nathan Landry, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Fr., Derry, N.H.) Landry placed first in the 200-Free (1:58.46) and 100-Free (54.12) events and was second in the 50-Free (25.06) at Husson on Friday evening.

Stephen Quinlan, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Sr., Andover, Mass.) Quinlan won the 200-Breast (2:27.48) and 100-IM (1:01.23) events and finished second in the 50-Breast (31.55) at Husson on Friday evening.

Emily Roy, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Jr., Sidney, Maine) won the 50-Back (34.01) and 200-Back (2:33.14) and finished second in the 100-IM (1:14.35) at Husson on Friday evening.
