GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 3

(FOR THE WEEK OF OCT. 29-NOV. 4)

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Luke Rodarte, Colby-Sawyer (So., Truckee, Calif.) 

Rodarte led the Colby-Sawyer men's swim team at Saint Michael's on Saturday with a pair of solid results. Rodarte won the 50 breaststroke with a time of 28.63 and then added a second place finish in the 50 freestyle in 23.23.

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Aine Scholand, Simmons (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.)

The junior won all three individual events she entered and helped the Sharks win the 200-yard freestyle relay as well. Scholand topped all four teams in a quad-dual meet featuring Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Brandeis University, Babson College and Smith College, winning the 1000-yard freestyle by over 21 seconds with a time of 10:46.28 for Simmons, before adding a first-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:59.95. The junior tacked on a 10-plus second win in the 500-yard freestyle on a time of 5:17.26, before helping the Sharks win the 200-yard freestyle relay. Junior Laura List swam the opening leg, followed by senior Laura Simpson, sophomore Olivia Walz and the anchor by Scholand for a time of 1:44.31. 

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

GianCarlos Banrey, Regis  (Fr., Roslindale, Mass.)

Banrey continues to post impressive performances as he starts his collegiate career. He first swam the third (butterfly) leg of the meet-opening 200 medley relay as Regis won the event by 7.5 seconds with a time of 1:47.07. In individual events, Banrey earned a new season-best time in the 100 butterfly, finishing first in 53.47 seconds. The freshman followed that with a victory in the 100 freestyle in 50.70 seconds, also a season-best mark, and he had the top time in the 50 butterfly at 24.21 seconds, just 1/10th of a second off the pool record he established in the home opener three weeks ago.

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sarah Singleton, Simmons (Fr., Mission Hills, Calif./Grace Christian Academy)

The first year won a pair of events in a quad-dual meet with Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Brandeis University, Babson College and Smith College and also helped the Sharks to a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Singleton's time of 2:14.83 captured the 200-yard backstroke among all teams and she later finished ahead of the field in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:00.53. The rookie swam the butterfly leg of the 200-yard medley relay to contributed to a time of 1:55.80.


WEEK 3 HONOR ROLL
Eddie Capoldo, Elms (So., Brunswick, Maine) - Capoldo racked up 22 points for the Blazers against St. Joseph's (ME). He won the 50 yard butterfly and the 200 yard freestyle and finished second in the 200 yard breaststroke . He also led off the Elms 400 freestyle relay squad that earned four more points with a second-place finish.

Kelly Scianna, Elms (Jr., Mildord, Conn.) - Scianna netted 27 points for Elms against St. Joseph's (ME) with first-place finishes in each of the three individual events she entered. Scianna won the 50 yard backstroke (31.82), 50 yard freestyle (27.93) and 400 yard IM (5:23.58). Scianna also led Elms to a second-place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay, helping the relay finish in 4:12.63.

Megan Duffy, Norwich (Fr., Shelton, Conn.) - Duffy swam in 11 events during Saturday's Louise Goodrum Invitational, hosted by UMass Dartmouth. Highlights include a second-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (1:06.27) and 50 yard freestyle (26.51) as well as the 500 yard freestyle (5:45.32) and the 100 yard IM (1:06.24). She also placed third in the 50 yard breaststroke (34.10).

Cameron Ferreira, Norwich (So., Cocoa Beach, Fla.) - Ferreira placed second in both the 100 yard IM (58.82) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.64) and finished third in the 50 yard breaststroke (30.64) at Saturday's Louise Goodrum Invitational, hosted by UMass Dartmouth.

Elisabeth McQuaid, Regis (Jr., Marlborough, Mass.) - McQuaid broke her own school record in the six-dive one-meter event for the second straight week during Regis's dual meet against Gordon. McQuaid, the defending GNAC one-meter diving champion, once again set a new school record in the six-dive event, posting a score of 238.65, almost five full points more than the mark she posted just last week at Bridgewater State. McQuaid also compiled a five-dive score of 173.45 in the first one-meter diving session of the meet.

Joshua Unas, Regis (Sr., Santa Clarita, Calif) - Unas posted the fastest time in three individual events during Regis's victory over Gordon Saturday. Unas's first victory of the day came in the 50 breaststroke in 29.31 seconds, 5/100ths of a second faster than his previous season-best mark posted last week. Unas also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.49, and he posted the fastest time in the 200 individual medley at 2:12.92. He also swam the second (breaststroke) leg in the 200 medley relay, helping the Pride to a 7.5-second win with a total time of 1:47.07.

Stephen Quinlan, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Sr., Andover, Mass.) - In a 122-97 victory over Elms College on Saturday, Quinlan won the 50-Breast (30.42) and 200-Breast (2:29.18) events and also swam legs for the winning 200-Medley (1:55.08) and 400-Free (3:43.73) relay teams.
