GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 5

(FOR THE WEEK OF NOV. 12 - NOV. 18)

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK 

Grant Kollien, Regis (Mass.) (So., Acton, Mass.)

Kollien won three events Saturday as Regis cruised to a dual meet victory over conference foe Saint Joseph's College. Kollien first won the 1000 freestyle by over seven seconds with a season-best time of 11:09.15 not just for himself, but for the team. Less than five minutes later, he won the 200 freestyle by a half-second with a time of 1:59.74. His third victory of the day came in the 500 freestyle with another season-best mark, winning in 5:27.04.

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sarah Leonard, Regis (Mass.) (Jr., Brockton, Mass.)

Leonard won two individual events and was part of both relays with the best time as Regis defeated Saint Joseph's College in a dual meet Saturday. She led off the 200 medley relay with a 50 back split of 29.63 seconds, establishing a lead for her team that it would not give up in winning the event in 2:00.54, just 1/100ths of a second off the team's best time so far this season. She won the 50 backstroke by 0.41 seconds with a time of 29.55 seconds, and then she finished first in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.14, a season-best time both personally and for the team. Leonard ended the day by swimming the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay, posting a 50 free split of 26.16 seconds as her quartet ended up with the best time in the event at 1:46.95, the fastest time for the Pride this year.

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

GianCarlos Banrey, Regis (Mass.) (Fr., Roslindale, Mass.)

Banrey finished first in three individual events as Regis defeated Saint Joseph's College in a dual meet Saturday. First, he posted a 50 fly split of 23.97 seconds to help his 200 medley relay team finish first with an overall time of 1:46.83. Banrey won the 100 butterfly by almost six full seconds with a time of 54.63 seconds, followed by a win in the 100 freestyle in 52.08 seconds. He capped the day by touching the wall first in the 50 butterfly in 24.26 seconds.

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Julia Burke, Regis (Mass.) (Fr., North Andover, Mass.)

Burke won two individual events as Regis defeated Saint Joseph's College in a dual meet Saturday. Burke first swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay, posting a 50 breaststroke split of 35.85 seconds to help the Pride win the event with an overall time of 2:00.54, just 1/100ths of a second off the team's best time this season. Burke won the 50 breaststroke with a season-best time of 35.72 seconds and the 100 breaststroke by almost four full seconds in 1:18.60, both a personal and team season-best mark.

 


WEEK 5 HONOR ROLL

Eddie Capoldo, Elms (So., Brunswick, Maine) - Capoldo won all three individual events he raced against UMass Dartmouth on Nov. 17, capturing 27 of the team's 74 points. He won the 100-meter butterfly (1:04.40), 100m breast (1:16.14) and 50m butterfly (28.56) and also helped the Blazers add two points in the 200m freestyle relay (1:58.83).

Brittany North, Elms (So., Palmer, Mass.) - North led the Blazer women with 22 individual points against UMass Dartmouth on Nov. 17. She won the 100m fly (1:20.05) and 100m backstroke (1:17.47) and took second in the 400m freestyle (5:23.41)

Sara Manjikian, Simmons (So., Belmont, Mass.) - The sophomore placed first on both the one and three-meter diving boards and broke the school-record on the three-meter board, which stood for seven years. Manjikian scored 240.30 points vs. University of New England to surpass the former school mark by three points and win the three-meter event. She scored at least 6½ on 14 of 18 of the judges' scores that she received during the event and tallied two eights and a seven on her fourth dive of the set. Her most impressive dive of the event might have been her second effort, where she tallied a trio of sevens on a dive with a 2.2 degree of difficulty. The second-year diver also won the one-meter board earlier in the meet with a score of 223.15.

Sarah Singleton, Simmons (Fr., Mission Hills, Calif.) - Singleton won the two individual events she entered, touching the wall at 1:03.49 in the 100-yard backstroke, winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.87, and also helped Simmons win both relay events. She swam the butterfly in the opening 400-yard medley relay ahead of Kerry Fleming's backstroke and the breaststroke segment by Elizabeth Bartlett, while Laura List closed out the race on the freestyle anchor for a combined time of 4:16.64. Singleton opened the 200-yard freestyle relay, followed by Aine Scholand, Olivia Walz and List to close out the meet with a winning mark of 1:45.08.
