McDevitt Notches 400th Career Coaching Victory in Monks Win Over U. Maine-Machias

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (8-3) toppled University of Maine-Machias (2-11), 89-34, in non-conference women's basketball action at the Harold AlfondHarold Alfond Center on Wednesday evening. Senior forward Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) was 9-12 from the floor and netted a game-high 18 points in the lopsided triumph.

Saint Joseph's opened the game on a 20-1 run with freshman Danica Gleason (South Portland, Maine) capping the offensive surge with a jumpshot 9:45 into play. The Monks carried a 38-13 cushion into intermission and put the contest completely out of reach by outscoring the Clippers by a 17-8 margin over the first six minutes of the second stanza en route to securing a 55-21 advantage.

For Head Coach Mike McDevitt '83, the victory was an historic one as the triumph counted as the 400th of his 21 seasons as the leader of the Saint Joseph's College women's basketball program. He is now 400-160 (.714) as the Monks' skipper and is the third coach in SJC Athletics history – joining baseball Head Coach Will Sanborn '86 (573) and former men's basketball Head Coach Rick Simonds (466) – to reach the 400-victory plateau.

In all, 11 different players scored points for the Monks in the victory. Senior Abby Young (North Yarmouth, Maine) netted 13 with a game-high nine rebounds (seven offensive), Gleason broke out with 11 points and added seven boards and four assists, junior Sarah Assante(Standish, Maine) boasted nine points, four steals and a pair of assists, and first-year Mikaela Rowell (Derry, N.H.) chipped in eight points, three caroms and a pair of blocked shots on the evening.

For the Clippers, sophomore Kirsti Wright (Lubec, Maine) and senior Emma LeGallais (Cornwall, Ontario) scored 11 points apiece and freshman Meagan Cope (Dresden, Maine) contributed five points and four steals in what was the team's 10th-consecutive loss this season.

As the score indicates, Saint Joseph's dominated in nearly all facets of the game, but perhaps most impressive was the Monks' ability to take advantage of the Clippers' turnovers, as the hosts netted 41 points off 25 Maine-Machias miscues in tonight's contest.

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Saturday when the Monks open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 1:00 PM contest at Anna Maria College. Maine-Machias hosts USCAA-rival Vermont Tech at 12:00 PM on Friday.
