GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 6

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Laura List, Simmons (Sr., Bedford, Mass.)

The senior won both individual events that she competed in and helped the Sharks to a win in the 200-yard medley relay to open the meet on November 16 in the team's 185-77 victory over host University of New England. List won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:07.67 and added a victory in the 50-yard butterfly with a mark of 28.38. The Co-Captain swam the freestyle anchor leg of the 200-yard medley relay to contribute to a winning time of 1:59.00 for the Sharks.

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Steven Johnston, Husson (So., Hermon, Maine)

Displaying his freestyle versatility, the sprinter eclipsed the 500 free school record that was set in January 1973 by 10 seconds with his 5:22.06 finish in a double dual meet Friday with Maine Maritime and Saint Joseph's (Maine) in Standish, Maine Prior to his record setting 500 swim, the sophomore collected a 22.40 win in the 50 free and a 50.37 victory in the 100 free. Johnston also swam the anchor leg (22.80) on the Eagles' winning 200 free relay.

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Meg Driscoll, Simmons (Fr., Haverhill, Mass.)

The first year was the high-scorer of the meet in a 185-77 victory for Simmons at host UNE on November 16. The rookie won a pair of events and finished second in another to give her 22 points on the day. The Haverhill High School product won both breaststroke events, touching the wall first in the 50-yard race with a clip of 35.40 and went on to take home a victory in the 100-yard event with a mark of 1:15.77. Driscoll was the runner-up in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 28.97. She capped the meet by leading off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay and helping the Sharks post a time of 1:47.13.

 

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Evan Whaley, Saint Joesph's (Maine) (Fr., Natick, Mass.)

Whaley won the 200-Free (1:55.73), 100-Fly (59.37) and 500-Free (5:17.02) in a double-dual meet with Husson University and Maine Maritime Academy on Friday evening.
