GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 4

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Aine Scholand, Simmons (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.)

Scholand was dominant in both distance events for the Sharks in a quadruple dual-meet at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on November 1. The senior turned in a time of 10:56.86 in the 1000-yard freestyle to win the even by more than 20 seconds over host WPI, Brandeis University, Babson College and Smith College. Scholand followed the victory with a win in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall first at 5:22.32 to win by more than six seconds. Scholand also swam the anchor leg to help the Sharks place fourth overall in the 400-yard freestyle in a time of 3:52.22 to put them second in head-to-head action with WPI, Brandeis and Babson, while placing ahead of Smith.

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sam Carlson, Norwich (Jr., Dedham, Maine)

Carlson won the 200 yard men's freestyle in 1:53.85 in a 181-112 win over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday. Carlson also took first in the men's 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.30.

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Nikky Ansley, Norwich (Fr., Berlin, Germany)

Ansley continued her red-hot start to the season with a win in the women's 200 yard freestyle in 2:03.28. Ansley went on to win the women's 50 yard freestyle in 25.24 and the women's 100 yard freestyle in 55.51 as the NU women fell to SUNY Potsdam 145-140. Nikky has not finished outside of first place in any individual race this season.

 

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Evan Whaley, Saint Joesph's (Me.) (Fr., Natick, Mass.)

Whaley placed first in the 200-Free (2:07.54), 100-Free (59.92) and 50-Fly (29.67) events at Elms College on Saturday.


WEEK 4 HONOR ROLL

Jinnae Jang, Colby-Sawyer (Jr., Fall River, Mass.) - Jang picked up a pair of individual wins at Saturday's home meet against Division II Saint Michael's. Jang touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming to a season-best 2:07.51 to win by almost three seconds. Later in the meet, the junior claimed first in the 100-yard individual medley, by nearly four seconds, with a time of 1:05.69.

Megan Duffy, Norwich (So., Shelton, Conn.) - Duffy took first in the women's 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.75. Megan would later win the women's 500 yard freestyle in 5:29.58 as well as the 200 yard IM in 2:19.71 in a close 145-140 loss to SUNY Potsdam Saturday.

Kyleigh Boatwright, Regis (So., Roseville, Calif.) - Boatwright was the only Regis swimmer to win more than one individual event as she helped the Pride defeat Gordon in a dual meet Saturday. First, she won the 100 butterfly by 2.7 seconds with a time of 1:05.44. She then finished first in the 100 backstroke by over five seconds with a mark of 1:05.35. Occupying the second leg, Boatwright closed out the meet by posting a 50 free split of 28.62 seconds as her 200 freestyle relay team posted the fastest time in the event at 1:49.42.

Jacob Wyse, St. Joseph (Conn.) (So., Broad Brook, Conn.) - Wyse swam "The Gauntlet" on Saturday at the 8th Annual Louise Goodrum Invitational hosted by UMass Dartmouth in the Trip Athletic Center Natatorium. Wyse swam every single event on the day and won four of them, touching the wall first in the 200 Free (1:54.51), 100 Free (52.12), 500 Free (5:21.24), and 100 IM (59.57). The reigning GNAC Rookie of the Year didn't finish outside the top-7 in any of the 11 individual events he competed in, finishing on the podium a total of eight times on the day.

Autumn Nostrom, Saint Joesph's (Me.) (Sr., Lyman, Maine) - Nostrom won the 50-Breast (42.42) and 100-Breast (1:32.38) at Elms College on Saturday.

Ryan Watson, Saint Joesph's (Me.) (So., Bangor, Maine) - Watson won the 800-Free (10:10.62) and 400-Free (4:52.37) events and was second in the 100-Fly (1:21.57) at Elms College on Saturday.
