WOMEN'S TENNIS: Colby-Sawyers Captures Second-Ever GNAC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Top-seeded Colby-Sawyer College was victorious over third-seeded Regis College, 5-0, to win the 2021 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Kelsey Courts on Saturday afternoon. It marks the second team title in program history under head coach Barry Schoonmaker since joining the GNAC in 2018, with the first coming back in 2018. With the victory, the Chargers earn the league's automatic qualifier to the 2021 NCAA Division III Tournament next spring.

Rapid Recap:

  • The women began their triumph over the Pride sweeping in the opening doubles matches. #1 doubles pair, freshman Grace Carpenter (Milford, N.H.) and junior Emily Hill (Wilmington, Mass.) picked up a 8-6 victory. #2 doubles group, sophomore Lindsay Macdonald (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and freshman Elise Hogan (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up a dominant 8-1 win while #3 doubles pair, senior Amira Eid (Pelham, N.H.) and freshman Amelia Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) delivered a 8-2 victory to propel the team to a 3-0 lead.  
  • During singles play, Carpenter competing in the #3 slot defeated Samantha Gevry by a 6-0, 6-3 final. Hogan competing in the #4 spot finished off her opponent by a 6-2, 6-0 final to clinch the GNAC trophy to Colby-Sawyer.
  • The Chargers were leading in all other singles at the time, however the matches were declared unfinished as GNAC Tournament contests are played to decision.
  • Colby-Sawyer ended the fall season by not losing a single set in GNAC competition, ending an impressive 64-0 in conference play.
