GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 7

FOR THE WEEK OF NOV. 29 - DEC. 5

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Brendan Pike, Regis (Sr., Weymouth, Mass.) - Pike continued to lead the Regis men's team as it competed on consecutive days. Friday night against Elms, Pike finished first in the 50 breaststroke in 29.72 seconds and in the 100 individual medley in 58.38 seconds, both season-best times. Saturday against Husson, he touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.02, nearly nine full seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, and then he came right back for a first-place finish in the 50 backstroke in 28.19 seconds, close to two seconds in front of second place. In a time trial, he broke his own pool record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:26.23, 1.34 seconds faster than his previous mark.

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Lauren Howard, Simmons (Sr., Abington, Mass.) - Howard was one of only two Simmons swimmers to qualify for the B finals at the MIT Invitational that featured four nationally-ranked swimming programs. In the B finals of the 100-yard free, Howard touched the wall with a season-best time of 54.31 - clipping two seconds from her previous best against Merrimack (56.00).

 

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Sam Madriz, Regis (So., Union, N.J.) - Madriz led the Pride to a dual-meet victory over Elms Friday night, followed by two individual event victories over Husson Saturday. In Saturday's meet, he won the 100 butterfly in a season-best time of 58.27 seconds, 3.51 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, followed by a victory in the 50 butterfly in 26.30 seconds, also a season-best mark. He also posted a time of 2:16.48 in the 200 butterfly Friday evening to qualify for the NEISDA Championships in that event.

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Katie Durrua, Univ. of New England (So., Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) - At the Maine Meet -- which included the likes of deep programs in Bates, Colby, Bowdoin, and the University of Maine, among others -- Durrua had a pair of top-10 showings, coming in the 100 butterfly (6th; 1:01.78) and 200 butterfly (7th; 2:21.65). Of the team's 40 points by individuals, she accounted for 25. She was also the top finisher on the squad in two other events, and swam in a pair of relays.


GNAC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

Sabrinna Accioly, Albertus Magnus (So., West Haven, Conn.) - Accioly competed in three events for the Falcons at the Connecticut Cup on Saturday. The sophomore posted the team's highest finish of the day, taking 21st in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 34.20. Accioly also finished 35th in the 50 fly (31.14) and 44th in the 50 freestyle (28.78).

Kelsey Brown, Colby-Sawyer (Sr., Douglas, Mass.) - Brown was the star for the Chargers this past weekend at Bridgewater State, collecing her first individual win of the meet during the 50 fly with a finishing time of 27.86. Brown followed with another individual victory in the 200 fly, hitting the wall with a final time of 2:25.64. Her third individual win came in the 200 IM event in which Brown completed in 2:21.05.

Kyleigh Boatwright, Regis (Sr., Roseville, Calif.) - After two individual event victories Friday, Boatwright led the Pride women to victory over Husson Saturday with three individual wins. First, she swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay Saturday to help Regis win the meet-opening event by close to five full seconds. Boatwright then won the 50 backstroke by over a second in 30.38 seconds, the 100 backstroke by a second in a season-best time of 1:04.76, and the 200 individual medley by over two seconds in 2:24.14, also a season-best mark. Those came just about 16 hours after wins in the 200 backstroke (2:21.22) and the 100 individual medley (1:05.97) against Elms Friday evening.

Olivia Luhnau, Regis (Fr., Denver, Colo.) - Luhnau led the Pride women to dual-meet victories over Elms Friday and Husson Saturday. Friday, she picked up individual victories in the 100 backstroke (1:06.05) and the 50 freestyle (26.30), plus she anchored the 400 freestyle relay with a 100 free split of 59.16 seconds. Saturday, she anchored the 200 medley relay to a 4.98-second victory, and then she won the 200 freestyle in 2:06.92. Luhnau also finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.60, part of a 1-2-3 Regis finish that helped the Pride prevail over the Eagles.

Brielle Bergeron, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Sr., Easthampton, Mass.) - Bergeron excelled from the diving board for the Blue Jays at the 2021 Connecticut Cup hosted by Wesleyan University this past Saturday inside Wesleyan Natatorium. Competing against the top collegiate divers in the state, Bergeron placed ninth from the 1-meter board with a score of 147.20 and followed that up with a fourth-place finish from the 3-meter board with a score of 161.15.

Jacob Wyse, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Sr., Broad Brook, Conn.) - Wyse was USJ's top swimmer at the 2021 Connecticut Cup hosted by Wesleyan this past Saturday inside Wesleyan Natatorium. Wyse registered three top-15 individual swims against the top collegiate swimmers in the state and was part of USJ's record-breaking 200-Yard Medley Relay team on the afternoon. Wyse swam the butterfly leg of the medley relay in 24:16 as the team finished with a new program-best time of 1:44.45, shaving more than a second off the previous school standard. He followed that up with a 15th-place swim out of 28 in the 100 Butterfly (54.81), 10th-place swim out of 26 in the 100 Backstroke (57.15), and ninth-place swim out of 23 in the 400 IM (4:26.95) to lead the Blue Jays.

Ella Harmon, Simmons (Fr., Keller, Texas) - Harmon posted a pair of personal-best times that the three-day MIT Invitational that featured four nationally-ranked swimming programs. In the C finals of the 200 fly on Saturday, Harmon clipped seven seconds from her previous best touched the wall with a time of 2:22.90. On the final day, Harmon beat her best by one second in the prelims of the 100 fly, posting a time of 1:02.20, then in the finals she clocked a 1:02.67.
