BOSTON, Mass. – Emmanuel College senior midfielder Mikayla Guthrie (North Andover, Mass.) has been named to the Women's Soccer Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-American Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Division III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division III Academic All-America® teams.
Guthrie becomes the first player in program history to garner the honor after appearing on the national ballot following her selection to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-Region squad last month. Guthrie was one of four student-athletes honored from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on the Academic All-Region team as Norwich University, Saint Joseph's College (ME) and Simmons University each landed a representative on the All-Region squad and is now one of only five players from New England to garner All-American accolades. Guthrie joins MIT's Lily Mueller and Hailey Nichols as First Team recipients while Sara Kogelmann of Connecticut College and Emily Berzolla of MIT earned Third Team honors.
Guthrie, who sports a cumulative grade point average of 4.00 on a 4.00 scale and is an elementary education major, led the Saints in goals (14) and points (35) while ranking second in assists (7) this season all of which are new career highs for the senior. Guthrie was a perfect 1-for-1 in penalty kicks this fall and posted two game winners in victories of Newbury College and Norwich University. In the victory over Newbury, Guthrie scored a single-game program-record five goals in Emmanuel's 7-0 win.
Off the field, Guthrie is doing her student-teaching at the Lawrence School in Brookline, Mass where she is currently teaching third graders.
This year, the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-American first team women's squad has a 3.98 average GPA with the 34 total honorees coming in at 3.95.
CoSIDA, which began its recognition of NCAA scholar athletes in the 1950's, has honored thousands of deserving recipients across all divisions in numerous sports. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a 4.00 scale, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her institution and be nominated by his/her Sports Information Director.
Emmanuel closed its best season since 2009 last week as the Saints registered a record of 14-6 and reached the GNAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2015. Their .700 winning percentage is the second-highest in program history and the 14 total victories ranks tied for second-most since the program's inception.
