Saint Joseph’s (Maine) To Face No. 3 RIC to Open NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship

INDIANAPOLIS – 2024 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women’s Basketball Champion Saint Joseph’s (Maine) was one of 64 teams selected into the 2024 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship tournament on Monday afternoon during the NCAA.com Selection Show.

The Monks drew No. 3 Rhode Island College as their first-round opponent with tip off scheduled for 8 p.m.

SJC was one of 42 teams to earn their selections via their league’s automatic qualifier. The Monks put together a perfect 14-0 GNAC (21-7 overall) season to secure the No. 1 seed heading into the 2024 GNAC Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. The two-time reigning GNAC Champions knocked off No. 8 seed Rivier, No. 4 seed Emmanuel, and No. 2 seed University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) to punch their ticket into the national tournament.

RIC, which is ranked No. 3 in the D3hoops.com Women’s Top-25, will be a tough task as it comes into the national tournament undefeated at 27-0. Naturally the Anchorwomen were the No. 1 seed in the Little East Conference (LEC) Championship Tournament, going 16-0 during league play. They cruised through the tournament, defeating Eastern Connecticut State in the semifinals before best UMass Dartmouth, 67-52, in the championship.

Joining Saint Joseph’s and RIC in Providence are No. 21 Gettysburg, automatic qualifiers from the Centennial Conference, and Saint John Fisher, the Empire 8 (E8) Champions. They will face off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Gettysburg comes into this year’s championship sporting a 24-3 (19-1 Centennial) record, while Saint John Fisher is currently 23-4 (14-2 E8).

RIC is one of 16 sites hosting games this weekend. The winners will advance to one of four campus sites, which will host third-round and quarterfinal games on Friday-Saturday, March 8-9.

Those winners will then move onto the finals site at Capital Center Performance Arena in Columbus, Ohio for the semifinals and championship game. The semifinals will take place on Thursday, March 14 with the title game scheduled for Saturday, March 16.
