Mary Hyde Joins USJ 1,000 Point Club

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) became the sixth player in school history to score 1,000 career points as the University of Saint Joseph basketball team defeated the Wentworth Institute of Technology 60-52 Monday in a non-conference game at the Tansey Gymnasium.

Hyde began the night with 998 points and reached the milestone with a layup 5:52 into the game that put USJ ahead 9-5 during a 14-0 run that enabled the Blue Jays to take an early lead which they maintained throughout the game.

Heather Framski (Prospect, Conn.) had her third double-double of the season for St. Joseph with a team-high 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Brianna Ferraro(Waterbury, Conn.), Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, Conn.) andLindsey Dionne (Portland, Conn.) all had nine points apiece for USJ and Ferraro also had four steals and four assists. Hyde finished with six points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Wentworth (2-2) scored the first five points, but the Leopards only lead of the night would be short-lived as St. Joseph (4-4) scored the next 14 points, which included five from Diliberto, four from Shauna Sullivan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and the benchmark bucket from Hyde.

Wetnworth crept within 16-13, but another run – this one of 11-0 – allowed USJ to lead 27-13 on the way to a 29-19 halftime edge. The Blue Jays lead peaked at 17 in the second half and despite a late push, Wentworth was never able to get closer than the eight-point final margin.

"Mary's a steady, all-around player who does a lot of things for us besides score," USJ coach Jack Casey said. "It's nice to see someone achieve a milestone like this while still contributing in so many ways. She makes steals, big plays on defense, passes well and rebounds. She plays a complete game."

St. Joseph hosts Mass. College of Liberal Arts Fri., December 6 at 6 p.m. in the final game of the fall semester.
