SJC Defends GNAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Title

BOSTON – Saint Joseph's (Maine) earned 224 points on Sunday (Feb. 18) to secure the 2024 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship at Boston University Track & Tennis Center.

With the victory, the Monks claim their second straight conference title.

Regis was the runner up with 107 points followed by Colby-Sawyer with a score of 81. Lasell and Emmanuel scored 32 and 27 points, respectively.

Along with the team title, SJC also won 11 of the 16 scoring events. Nine of those titles came on the track with two apiece going to Abdirizak Abukar, Ryan Graham, and Haytham Ramadan. Abukar was the fastest sprinter for the Monks winning the 60m and 200m dashes. He recorded a 60m tie of 7.10 and a 200m time of 22.17. Meanwhile, Graham handled the distance races, winning both the 3K and 5K with respective times of 9:50.67 and 16:19.02. Ramadan slid in between those two, winning the 800m and mile runs. He clocked in at 1:58.27 in the 800m and 4:41.59 in the mile.

Ryan Farr's 49.97 time in the 400m gave SJC another individual champion, while the Monks also won the 4x400 and distance medley relays. Their 4x400m relay time was 3:29.45, while the distance medley finished in 11:22.96.

Two Saint Joseph's throwers also secured gold as Andrew James won the shot put with a mark of 12.09m (39'8") and Wesley Hundley took the weight throw title with a heave of 13.42m (44'0.5").

The field events were a strength for this year's runner-up, Regis, as its student-athletes claimed gold in the pole vault, long jump, and triple jump. It was Justin Thuotte taking top prize in both events in the jumping pit. He won the long jump with a mark of 6.44m (21'1.5") and earned the top spot in the triple jump with a distance of 12.86m (42'2.25"). Meanwhile, Brett Kiesel cleared 3.55m (11'7.75") to win the pole vault.

The Chargers and Saints each had one individual champion with Chase Adams winning the 60m hurdles for Colby-Sawyer and Pierre Paul Labossiere taking the top spot in the high jump for Emmanuel. Adams crossed the finish line at 8.69 and Labossiere cleared a height of 1.85m (6'0.75").

The top finisher for Lasell was Nathaniel Gonzalez who earned silver in the high jump, clearing 1.80m (5'10.75").

All the individual champions, along with the other medalists will be named to the GNAC All-Conference Team with the major awards voted on at a later time by the league's head coaches.
