GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 1

 

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Jinnae Jang, Colby-Sawyer (Jr., Fall River, Mass.)

In the season opener, a victory over Saint Joseph's (ME), Jang was a member of winning relay teams in the 200 medley (2:00.40) and 200 freestyle (1:49.43). She also came away with individual wins in the 100 freestyle, with the only sub-minute swim of 58.73, and the 50 breaststroke (35.12). In a tough loss to Keene State, Jang also captured an individual victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.38. She followed with a second place in the 100-yard butterfly, at 1:05.25.

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Brendan Pike, Regis (So., Weymouth, Mass.)

Pike won three individual events as Regis defeated UNE in its season-opening dual meet. First, Pike swam the second leg of the victorious 200 medley relay, posting a 50 breaststroke split of 30.87 seconds. Pike then cruised to victory by almost nine full seconds in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.51. He held on for the win in the 100 freestyle in 55.64 seconds and easily touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1:09.27.

 

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Leilani Marlow, Colby-Sawyer (Fr., Kapolei, Hawaii)

In her collegiate debut, a win over Saint Joseph's (ME), Marlow took top honors in the 50 backstroke (29.61) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.48). In a loss to Keene State, Marlow won the 100 backstroke as she lowered her season best time to 1:05.08.

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Robert Wood, Regis (Fr., Cathedral City, Calif.)

In his first collegiate swim meet, Robert Wood posted the fastest time in three individual events. In addition, he anchored the victorious 200 medley relay with a 50 free split of 24.69 seconds. Wood won the 50 breaststroke by over three seconds in 32.92 seconds and the 500 freestyle by over nine seconds with a time of 5:22.37. Wood also posted the fastest time in the 100 IM with a mark of 1:03.84.


WEEK 1 HONOR ROLL

Sarah Leonard, Regis (Sr., Brockton, Mass.) - Leonard led Regis to a dual meet victory over University of New England in the season opener for the Pride. She led off the victorious 200 medley relay with a 50 back split of 28.78 seconds, 2.27 seconds faster than the next-quickest split. She won the 50 backstroke with a time of 28.87 seconds, followed by victories in the 50 freestyle in 26.72 seconds and in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.27.

Emily Roy, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Sr., Sidney, Maine) - Roy placed first in the 50-Back (34.83), 100-Fly (1:18.20), and 100-Back (1:13.84) in a win over Albertus Magnus College on Saturday and placed second in the 50-Back (34.06) in the Monks' season-opener at Colby-Sawyer on October 4th
