GNAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week Report #3

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Michael Torres, University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (Gr., M)

Graduate student Michael Torres went on an offensive tear this week, leading the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) to a 2-0-0 week. He scored eight points including three goals and two assists. First against Dean on Wednesday (Sept. 13), the Blue Jays midfielder contributed to three of his team’s four goals. He found the back of the net twice and helped out on another in the 4-0 win. He then had a goal and an assist in a solid 5-0 victory over Rivier on Saturday (Sept. 16).

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Liam Foley, Saint Joseph’s (Maine) (Jr., GK)

Junior goalkeeper Liam Foley backstopped Saint Joseph’s (Maine) to a pair of GNAC victories this week. He conceded only one goal, while denying eight opposing opportunities. First he made two saves in a 3-1 win over Regis at home. He followed that up with a perfect performance with six stops in a 1-0 result over Anna Maria on the road. One of those saves was a penalty kick attempt, preserving the Monks victory.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Gianmarco Delacruz, Mitchell (Fr., M)

Freshman Gianmarco Delacruz helped Mitchell pick up a key conference with this week against Emmanuel. Delacruz found the back of the net late in the first half to score what would be the eventual game-winner in a 2-1 win over the Saints.


WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

Valtar Santiago, Anna Maria - Made nine saves against Saint Joseph's (Maine) in a hard-luck 1-0 loss.

Aidan Bagley, Johnson & Wales - Scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 2-0 win over Regis. Is tied for the GNAC lead with four goals.

Nick Ghirardi, Mitchell - Scored a pair of goals and added an assist, as the Mariners went 1-1 in conference play. Against Albertus Magnus with Mitchell trailing 3-0, began the second half by serving a free kick opportunity into the box that was headed in for the first Mitchell goal of the game. Then converted a penalty kick opportunity to make it a one goal game. Followed up that performance by making another penalty goal during a 2-1 win over Emmanuel.

Logan Cassin, New England College - Scored both goals in the team's 2-1 victory over the Emmanuel, their first-ever win in GNAC action. It was his seventh career game-winning goal. 

El Hadji Anne, University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) - Kept his first clean sheet, playing all 90 minutes during a 4-0 victory at home against Dean. Tallied four saves, including a penalty kick save, to keep the shutout.
