2023 GNAC Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced

WINTHROP, Mass. – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) announced its 2023 Men’s Soccer All-Conference Teams and major award winners on Tuesday afternoon. Saint Joseph’s (Maine) and the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) each had six selections to lead the group.

Voting was conducted by the league’s 15 men’s soccer head coaches following the regular season and did not take postseason play into account.

Two Johnson & Wales student-athletes were featured among the major award winners with Aidan Bagley earning Offensive Player of the Year honors, while his teammate Jonathan Baker was named Defensive Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Saint Joseph’s (Maine) goalkeeper Liam Foley took home Goalkeeper of the Year honors and Emmanuel Ofori from USJ was named Rookie of the Year. Dean head coach Joseph Campbell was voted the 2023 Coach of the Year with Regis earning the Institutional Sportsmanship Award.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Aidan Bagley, Johnson & Wales

Bagley was one of the league’s most prolific scorers this year. In conference contests, he scored 10 goals and registered five assists to give him a league-leading 25 points in GNAC play. Overall, he recorded 11 goals during the regular season, which ranked him in the top-50 nationally, as did his 27 total points. Four of Bagley’s goals also accounted for game-winners, which led the conference. He had three multi-goal games on the season and registered at least one point in 10 of JWU’s contests.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Jonathan Baker, Johnson & Wales

Baker was the anchor of the backline for Johnson & Wales, playing center back for league’s best scoring defense. He helped the Wildcats hold opponents to under a goal a game and produced a .531 goals-against average during the regular season. In conference play, JWU had nine shutouts and conceded more than one goal only once. Baker was also able to get forward to contribute five goals and three assists offensively.

GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR

Liam Foley, Saint Joseph’s (Maine)

Foley earned 11 wins in goal for Saint Joseph’s (Maine) this year, producing a goals-against average of .628 and a .825 save percentage. He was even stronger in conference play with .570 and .833 marks in those respective categories. His 11 GNAC wins led the conference with nine of those victories coming via clean sheets, which was also the top mark in the league. He made four or more saves six times this season, including an eight-save performance in a 1-0 win over Johnson & Wales. He was named Goalkeeper of the Week in the weeks ending Sept. 10 and Sept. 17.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Emmanuel Ofori, University of Saint Joseph (Conn.)

Ofori made quite and impact in his first collegiate season finding his way into the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) lineup right from the get-go. He quickly become of the GNAC’s top scorers and finished in the top-10 in the conference in both goals and points with 10 and 23, respectively. Eight of his tallies came in GNAC play, ranking him fifth in the conference. He also had three of his team’s game-winning goals in league play. He earned Rookie of the Week honors in the weeks ending Sept. 3 and Oct. 1. In the week ending Sept. 3, he was also named Player of the Week.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Joseph Campbell, Dean

Campbell led Dean to a 7-4-3 GNAC (9-4-3 overall) regular season this year, earning five more conference victories than a year ago when the Bulldogs missed out on the postseason. This year, Campbell’s squad found itself in the top half of the league and earned the No. 6 seed in the GNAC Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs played competitively with the entire conference, registering five conference shutouts and two of its four GNAC setbacks coming in narrow 1-0 defeats.
