WINTHROP, Mass. – Rebecca Mullen has officially been named Assistant to the Commissioner at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) league office, as announced by Commissioner Joe Walsh on Tuesday.

Mullen began working for the GNAC in July as the Special Events Specialist through the conference’s unique and well-recognized internship program. She assisted with the coordination of the conference’s biennial Professional Development Seminar (PDS) this past August and organized the GNAC volunteer efforts at the annual Brian Honan 5K Race/Walk last month in Allston, Mass.

A 2013 graduate of Worcester State University, Mullen also organized the GNAC’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) event this past weekend at Mount Ida College and will serve as the site representative at this weekend’s GNAC Women’s Tennis Tournament in Winchester, Mass. She has also assisted in the GNAC’s strategic communications endeavors, including player of the week reports.

Mullen replaces former GNAC staffer Doug Chin, who earlier this month was named the Sports Information Director at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Before earning her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Urban Studies from Worcester State, Mullen served as vice president of the department’s SAAC, which gave her the opportunity to help coordinate a Special Olympics Basketball tournament her junior year.

For the Lancers, she played four years of field hockey and two years of women’s lacrosse, while the field hockey program was honored for having the highest grade point average among all NCAA Division III programs nationwide her sophomore year. After graduating, she traveled to Scotland to play field hockey in a Friendship Series with USA International Athletes.

Mullen, a Peabody, Mass. native, is also currently the head swim coach of the Peabody Lynnfield YMCA Piranhas.

Founded in 1995, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) is an NCAA Division III association made up of 12 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes across the New England region. Each year, the GNAC sponsors and administers 17 championships, while balancing academic integrity, athletic opportunity and community involvement.
