Western New England Routs Non-Conference Opponent Lasell, 21-8, on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Two-time reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week Kaitlynn Stevens tied a career high with eight goals as Western New England used a fast start to cruise past visiting Lasell, 21-8, in a non-conference women's lacrosse match-up on Senior Day at Golden Bear Stadium on Thursday. The Golden Bears improve to 15-0 on the season and extended their regular-season unbeaten streak to 21 games dating to 2013, while the Lasers dip to 8-7.

Sophomore Taylor Scialdone matched teammate Stevens with a game-high eight points, including six assists to pace all student-athletes. Sophomore Bethany Peters pumped in three goals and three assists, junior tri-captain Jessica Scannapieco had a goal and three helpers, and senior tri-captain Kelsey Sherman and sophomore Brooke Kumnick contributed two goals apiece.

Prior to the game, Sherman along with classmates Janelle Gordon (1 ground ball) and Shelby Trebbe (1 goal, 1 assist, 7 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers) were honored for their contributions to the program during their WNE careers.

Bridget Doherty and Taylor Dooley each scored two goals for the Lasers, who also got three points from Britney Wuorio on a goal and two helpers.

The teams traded goals in the opening 1 minute and 19 seconds as Peters gave WNE a 1-0 lead just 38 seconds in on a nice feed from Scialdone and Wuorio tied it off a pass from Ashley Gleason at the 28:41 mark.

Continuing a strong possession game by winning three consecutive draw controls, Western New England then scored three unanswered goals within a 29 second span to make it 4-1 and the Golden Bears never looked back after that.

Doherty cut the deficit in half at 24:12 before Stevens scored back-to-back goals to make it 6-2 that precipitated a Lasell timeout with 20:52 to go.

The Golden Bears closed the first half by scoring seven of the next 10 goals for a 13-5 cushion at the intermission.

In the second half, WNE maintained no less than an eight-goal advantage to cruise to the victory.

Western New England also enjoyed advantages in shots (41-11), shots on goal (32-11), ground balls (35-19), clears (11-for-11, 10-of-18) and draw controls (21-10).

Scannapieco enjoyed an all-around game that included a game-best 11 draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover. April Canavan topped Lasell with four ground balls.

Western New England returns to the CCC scene on Saturday when the Golden Bears travel to Biddeford, Maine, to face the University of New England at 1 p.m.
