Western New England Comes Back to Clip Lasell in Overtime on the Road, 20-19

NEWTON, Mass.--Freshman Taylor Scialdone scored two of her five goals with 44 seconds left in regulation and then what proved to be the game-winner with 2 minutes and 29 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Western New England to a come-from-behind 20-19 non-conference victory over Lasell at Grellier Field on Thursday. The Golden Bears improve to 11-4 on the season while the Lasers' saw their nine-game win streak snapped to drop to 11-3.

Sophomores Jessica Scannapieco and Kaitlynn Stevens joined Scialdon with five goals apiece. Scannapieco, a tri-captain, also recorded game bests of seven draw controls and five ground balls while Stevens won five draws.  Freshman Brooke Kumnick (3 goals, 3 ground balls) and junior tri-captain Kelsey Sherman (2 points, 2 ground balls) also had multi-point games.

Lasell's Britney Wuorio led all scorers with eight goals and nine points, as Ashley Slattery added four goals and six points to go along with five draw controls and Bridget Doherty had a hat trick.

In the first half, Lasell took a 4-2 lead before Scannapieco netted an unassisted tally that sparked a four-goal run in a span of 4 minutes and 31 seconds. Western New England reclaimed the lead 6-4 after opening the scoring at the 27:40 mark.

The teams traded the next two goals before Wuorio finished the half with three, including a man-up, to end the half. The score was knotted at 8 apiece at the intermission.

In a back-and-forth affair in the second half, Lasell led 18-16 late on goals by Wuorio and Caitlyn Brecher.

With 1:38 to go, Scannapieco brought WNE within one and then less than a minute later Scialdone tied it up to force the extra session.

Stevens scored the go-ahead goal on a rebound with 28 seconds to go in the first 3-minute segment of the OT period after following up on her first shot that hit the post. Scialdone added an insurance tally at the 2:29 mark on the second 3-minute part of the OT clock before Rebecca Stanton scored 30 seconds later on a free-position attempt to make things interesting.

Western New England also enjoyed advantages with shots (46-36), shots on goal (34-28), clears (13-of-16, 9-of-16), turnovers (15-21) and ground balls (18-10).
