Women's Tennis Concludes Regular Season, Falls to Regis on Senior Day

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis battled strong, but fell to the visiting Regis (Mass.) Pride, 6-3, during Senior Day this afternoon in West Hartford. Prior to today's match, the Blue Jay's honored seniors Emily Kerr (Portland, Conn.) and Julia Michaud (Bristol, Conn.). USJ won two of six singles matches, and one of three doubles matches and rounded out their 2022 regular season slate.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The No. 1 doubles team of Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Kerr started off the match for the Blue Jays, falling, 8-2.
  • Julia Michaud (Bristol, Conn.) and Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.) would answer back for USJ during the No. 3 doubles match, taking down Regis's team, 8-4. The win levelled the score at 1-1.
  • Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) rounded out the doubles matches for the Blue Jays in No. 2 doubles, fighting hard, but dropping a close 8-7 decision.
  • Kerr would quickly tie the match up at 2-2 during the No. 2 singles match. After winning the opening set 6-2, the senior quickly won set two in a similar score line, 6-2.
  • The Blue Jays would take the lead in the match after the No. 6 singles match. Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) defeated her opponent in convincing fashion, 6-3, 6-1, giving USJ the 3-2 lead.
  • Regis would tie the match back up at 3-3 as Garcia dropped a 6-1, 6-1, decision during No. 3 singles.
  • Gilland would look to even the match back up during No. 1 singles, but she would ultimately fall in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
  • Regis secured the victory during No. 4 singles, as the Pride defeated Srivatsav, 6-2, 6-2, to take a 5-3 edge, putting the match out of reach.
  • Michaud would round out the day in the No. 5 singles match. After dropping the opening set, 6-3, she would continue to fight hard, btu fell in set two, 6-2, to give Regis a 6-3 victory.

QUOTABLE

"The team competed hard today against a strong Regis team. We took a few matches, winning No. 3 doubles and narrowly losing doubles No. 2 in a close tiebreaker. We also took a couple of singles matches. I'm very happy to celebrate our two seniors, Julia and Emily today, who each had a win! We will now focus on practicing for our playoffs next week," said head coach Karen Piazza.

NOTES

  • The team of Gilland and Kerr fell to 3-7 on the afternoon. As singles competitors, Gilland dropped to 2-8 while Kerr improved to 8-2.
  • With the result, Garcia and Srivatsav moved to 5-3 in No. 2 doubles. The defeat saw their three-match winning streak be snapped. Garcia moved to 3-6 with her result, while Srivatsav moved to 4-4 on the year.
  • Michaud and Webb's victory saw their record jump to 4-4 at No. 3 doubles on the season.
  • Michaud would fall to 3-6 in singles play.
  • The Pride increased their winning streak to six matches over the Blue Jays with the result.

UP NEXT

Women's tennis, who will be the sixth seed in the upcoming GNAC Championships, travels to Simmons for the first round. The first round is set to take place on Wednesday, October 12.
