New Haven, CT - The Albertus Magnus College Men's Soccer team defeated visiting St. Joe's (ME) 2-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. The #2 Falcons were hosting #7 St. Joe's (Me) at Celentano Field.
Albertus found the back of the net in the 21st minute when junior forward Jamal Howard (West Haven, CT/West Haven) finished a corner kick by sophomore Steven Zapata (Hamden, CT/Hamden) to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Zapata would tally his second assist on the day as freshman forward Rafael Guillen (Bakersfield, CA/Foothill) headed in the corner kick in the 33rd minute to give the Falcons the eventual 2-0 win.
Albertus outshot St. Joe's (ME) 9-4 in the first half and led 2-0 at halftime.
St. Joe's (ME) outshot the Falcons 11-8 in the second half with their best chance at scoring coming in the 80th minute as senior midfielder Paul Robins (Cornwall, England/The Poltair School) blasted an upper 90 shot that freshman goal keeper Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) made a diving save on, preserving the shutout victory.
The #2 Albertus Magnus College Falcons improve to 14-4-1, 6-2-1 GNAC while St. Joe's (ME) ends their season at 6-11-2, 3-5-2 GNAC. Albertus hosts #3 Norwich University (10-6-2, 6-3 GNAC) on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 pm for the GNAC Semifinals with the winner playing for the GNAC Title. The Falcons defeated Norwich 2-1 in the regular season at home on September 11.
