NEWTON, Mass. - Lasell University Director of Athletic Communications Kent Cherrington has been selected as one of six inductees of the 2020 College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame. Cherrington, who joined the Lasell University Athletic Department in January of 2018, will be inducted in a ceremony at the annual CoSIDA convention this June.

"I am extremely humbled and honored to receive this recognition. I'm reminded of what professional athletes have said, that they didn't play their sport so that they could get in the Hall of Fame; I didn't do this job so I could be in the Hall of Fame, but I'm extremely honored to be recognized and respected by my peers," Cherrington said.

A Sports Communication major at the University of New Hampshire, Cherrington began working in the sports information office as a student assistant, while also competing on the swimming and diving team. After completing his degree at UNH and serving as an intern at the University of Connecticut, his next stop was at Miami University of Ohio, where he began as the Assistant SID while helping drive computerized statistics forward. He was one of the first SID's in the country to use Stat-Crew for basketball and football, while also serving as a beta-tester for the early versions of the software.

Cherrington returned back to New Hampshire, being named the SID at Plymouth State University. At PSU he continued driving trends in the athletic communications industry by helping develop one of the first comprehensive college athletics websites.

"Looking back on my 35 years in this business, it's fun to think of all of the great games and great performances in college sports that I've witnesses and publicized, but mostly I look back and think about all of the people who have meant so much to me… my mentors, the student-athletes and coaches and administrators, the student workers who I've mentored, and my colleagues in this business. People say the Sports Information and Athletic Communications profession is a 'people business' and all of the people I've crossed paths with are what means the most to me."

Since arriving at Lasell in 2018, Cherrington has overseen the redesign of the new athletic department website, helped with the logo and branding process as the institution transitioned from College to University status.

"We were thrilled to welcome Kent to Lasell University two years ago. His professionalism and experience help our department in marketing and publicizing our student-athletes and programs," said Kristy Walter, Director of Athletics. "It is a tremendous honor for Kent to be inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame, and we congratulate him on being recognized for his service to the Athletic Communications industry."

In his time at Miami University (OH) Cherrington also served as a radio color and play-by-play commentator for ice hockey, while also being heard as a pregame and postgame contributor for football and basketball. Since returning to New England he has continued serving in those roles for a number of local colleges and universities.

A longtime member of professional organizations, CoSIDA and ECAC-SIDA, Cherrington served a three-year term on the CoSIDA College Division Board of Directors, also holding seat on their Management Advisory Committee and the Academic All-American Selection Committee. He also served on the ECAC-SIDA Board of Directors and was the president of the organization in 2006-07. In 2010, he was honored by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T. Marsh Award for outstanding service and commitment to the profession.

Cherrington will be joined in the 2020 CoSIDA Hall of Fame class by:

  • Joe Mitch – Missouri Valley Conference, Retired Assoc. Commissioner
