Monks Grab Two from Softball

GAME ONE:

STANDISH, ME: Rivier softball lost to Saint Joseph's College this afternoon in conference play on the road.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/22/23

- Score: SJC 8, Rivier 6

- Records: Rivier (14-19, 4-5 GNAC), SJC (16-15, 4-1 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- In the top of the first, Christina Panagiotopoulos (Lowell, MA) launched the ball to left center, sending Kylee Caetano (New Bedford, MA) home to get the Raiders on the board. The Monks quickly answered back scoring two runs in the bottom of the first generated by a single to the left side and fielder's choice hit to second base.

- Riv's Caetano hit to the right side in the second inning, giving Alyssa Gerardi (Manchester, NH) enough time to cross the plate to tie the score at 2-2.

- In the third, SJC took the lead again putting away two more runs, one caused by an error.

- Rivier accumulated three runs in the top of the fourth. Caetano got the scoring started with a fielder's choice hit to the short stop, Haley Rapaglia (Methuen, MA) singled through the right side, and Panagiotopolos finished it up with a walk. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Monks earned three runs as well, off three singles to take the lead again.

- Kayla Miles (Londonderry, NH) produced a base hit to the left side in the fifth inning, which scored Courtney Marioles (Hudson, NH) of Rivier.

- In the sixth, SJC secured the win adding on another run.

- There was no scoring in the seventh inning.

- Nicole Verette (Haverhill, MA) of Rivier was tagged with the loss, striking out two batters. Meredith Pence of St. Joe's earned the win, striking out two batters as well.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Caetano was 3-for-4, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs

- Miles was 3-for-4, with 1 RBI and 1 run

- Panagiotopoulos was 2-for-3, with 1 RBI

GAME TWO:

- Score: SJC 6, Rivier 3

- Records: Rivier (14-20, 4-6 GNAC), SJC (17-15, 5-1 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Raiders were unable to score until the fourth inning. The Monks put up one run in the first inning off a single through the right side and another run in the third inning from a double to left center.

- In the fourth inning, Raiders' Kayla Miles (Londonderry, NH) recorded a single through the left side, scoring Olivia Couto (Fairhaven, MA). SJC added on three runs in the fourth, earning three RBIs.

- Miles was back at it in the sixth inning, with a single to left pushing Couto home. Josie Maggiore (North Hampton, NH) reached first on a fielder's choice, which scored Avry Nelson (Methuen, MA). For the Monks in the sixth inning, one run was scored from a single to left center, putting SJC ahead by three.

- It was a scoreless seventh inning.

- Sydney Greeno (Shirley, MA) of Rivier was tagged with the loss. Emily Eagleston of SJC collected the win, striking out three batters and pitching the full seven innings.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Miles was 2-for-3, with 2 RBIs

- Couto was 2-for-4, with 2 runs

- Maggiore was 1-for-3, with 1 RBI

- Rivier softball will travel to face Fitchburg State University in a doubleheader, Wednesday at 3:00PM & 5:00PM in Fitchburg, MA.
