GNAC Women's Basketball Report: Week 1

( FOR THE OPENING WEEK OF NOV. 8 - 13)

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jakara Murray-Leach, Albertus Magnus (So., G/F - Norwalk, Conn.) - Murray-Leach led all players with 29 points on 12-for-25 (48%) shooting to help guide the Falcons to a season-opening 85-71 road win at Farmingdale State on Saturday. The sophomore also chipped in with nine rebounds (six offensive), five steals, two blocks, and an assist to round out her impressive stat line. Murray-Leach played 37 minutes against the Rams and led all players with nine fourth-quarter points. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Kayla Jackson, Elms (First Year, F - Saugus, Mass.) - Jackson averaged 17.0 points and an impressive 17.5 rebounds as the Blazers opened up with 2022-23 campaign with a 2-0 showing. She opened up her collegiate career with 16 points and 19 rebounds in a 75-69 victory over Salem State, before following up with 18 points and 16 boards in a 68-58 win at MCLA. Jackson shot 38.2% (13-34) from the floor and was 8-of-10 from the FT line. 


GNAC HONOR ROLL

Courtney Brewster, Colby-Sawyer (So, F - Castleton, Vt.) - Brewster averaged 11.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 3.0 blocks as CSC went 1-1 to open the season.

Rahmia Johnston, Elms (Junior, G - Trumbull, Conn.) - Johnston averaged 18.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in a 2-0 opening week for the Blazers.

Haley Brewster, Norwich (So, G - Virginia Beach, Va.) - Brewster posted a pair of double-doubles in the Cadets' 1-1 week for the opening stretch of the season, averaging 18.0 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals. She posted a 25-point, 15-rebound performance at Castleton, which included drilling five treys on 13 attempts. The sophomore followed that up by logging 11 points and 10 caroms in a win over Thomas. 

Madi Zancan, Regis (Mass.) (Fy., F - Cumberland, R.I.) - Zancan was one of Regis' top players in the first two collegiate games of her career last week, averaging 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 50% (7-14) overall. On Wednesdaynight at UMass Dartmouth, she led the Pride with 13 points and eight rebounds. On Saturday against Bridgewater State, she finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

Lyric Grumblatt, Rivier (Jr., G - Manchester, N.H.) - In a 2-1 start to their season, the reigning GNAC Player and Rookie of the Year averaged 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.0 steals for the Raiders, while shooting 43.5% (10-23) from three-point territory. 

Amanda Fudge, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Sr., G - Middletown, Conn.) - Fudge led the Blue Jays to a USJ Tip-Off Tournament title, being named the tournament's MVP. She averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists across the two wins, dropping a game-high 21 points in the first round against Bard before nearly recorded a triple-double against Lehman, recording eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Hannah Talon, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Junior, G - Windham, Maine) - Talon kicked off her junior season with 26 points off a 10-for-13 shooting effort - including a 4-for-4 performance from downtown - with five steals and four rebounds in a lopsided victory over Eastern Nazarene on Friday. In two games last week, Talon averaged 18.5 points while shooting a scorching 71.4% (15-21) from the floor and 62.5% (5-8) from three-point distance in two SJC victories.
