BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The
Bridgewater State University women's tennis team overcame an early
deficit as the Bears went on to defeat the Wildcats of Johnson
& Wales University, 5-4, this afternoon at the Rosen
Memorial Tennis Courts in Bridgewater.
Bridgewater (2-0) trailed 2-1 after doubles play but
then proceeded to capture four of the six singles flights to win
the match.
Senior co-captains Lauren Donnelly
(Centerville, Mass.) and Jessica Francis (West
Barnstable, Mass.) paced the Bears as they each recorded singles
victories and teamed for an 8-2 triumph at first doubles.
Donnelly posted a 6-1, 6-0 straight set win at the top singles
flight while Francis also won in straight sets at the second spot,
6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Jenna Williamson (Ludlow,
Mass.) and sophomore Julie Kraby (Wrentham, Mass.)
also earned singles wins in straight sets for Bridgewater.
Williamson at number three and Kraby at the fourth flight.
Junior Dana Trimborn (North Wales,
Penn.) led the way for Johnson & Wales (0-2) as she won in
straight sets at number five singles (6-3, 7-5) and teamed with
fellow junior Laura Schwenk (Ottumwa, Iowa) for an
8-4 victory at third doubles.
Bridgewater will travel to Newport, Rhode Island on
Saturday at noon for the Newport Grass Court Doubles
Tournament. Johnson & Wales will host Curry College on
Thursday at 3:30.
