INDIANAPOLIS – Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women’s Volleyball Champion Lasell will open the 2023 NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship with a matchup against No. 10 Johns Hopkins in regional action in Baltimore, Md. The Regional begins on Thursday, Nov. 16.

The Lasers, which won their first-ever GNAC Women’s Volleyball Championship, were one of 42 teams to earn their spot in the national tournament by winning their league’s automatic qualifier. The other 22 entries were selected by the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Committee as at-large selections. The entire 64-team field was announced on Monday (Nov. 13) during the NCAA.com Selection Show.

The GNAC Champions had a historic season this year, finishing the regular season with a 27-4 overall (12-3 GNAC) record. They didn’t have the easiest road to the title as they entered the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed. However, after defeating No. 5 seed Rivier in the quarterfinals, the Lasers were able to defeat No. 1 seed Simmons and No. 2 seed Regis to claim the conference crown.

Johns Hopkins, which is currently ranked No. 10 in the AVCA/TARAFLEX Division III WVB Poll, was also the beneficiary of an automatic qualifier as Blue Jays were the champions of the Centennial Conference. The regional host carries a 24-4 (9-1 Centennial) record into this year’s national tournament.

Six other teams will also be participating in the Johns Hopkins Regional. New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) automatic qualifier Ramapo (25-1, 7-1 NJAC) will play at-large selection Christopher Newport (21-12) in one of the other regional first round games. The final two matchups feature New England Small College Athletic Conference AQ No. 16 Wesleyan (22-1, 10-0 NESCAC) playing United East Champion Gallaudet (31-3, 6-0 UEC) and at-large choice Middlebury (15-8, 7-3 NESCAC) taking on Skyline Champion Manhattanville (20-11, 11-0 Skyline).

Johns Hopkins is one of eight regional sites that will be hosting competition from Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 16-18. The regional winners will advance to the 2023 NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship site at Roberts Pavilion in Claremont, Calif. Where Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will host the quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship from Nov. 29-Dec. 2.
