CSC, Regis Prevail in GNAC Women’s Tennis Semifinals, Meet in Championship Match

GNAC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

WINTHROP, Mass. – Colby-Sawyer and Regis both picked up victories on Saturday (Oct. 14) in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis Championship Semifinals. The two teams will meet for the GNAC title on Saturday, Oct. 21 at noon.

The top-seeded Chargers will serve as host for the GNAC Championship match after defeating No. 4 seed University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), 6-1, in their semifinal matchup. Meanwhile, the Pride went on the road to steal an upset victory over No. 2 seed Simmons, 5-1.

This year's championship is a repeat of the past two women's tennis championships, with Colby-Sawyer coming out on top in both those meetings.

The Chargers also had the advantage in the regular season, besting the Pride 7-2 in their meeting on Oct. 4.

The winner of next week's championship match earns the title of 2023 GNAC Women's Tennis Champion. The GNAC Champion will earn the conference's automatic qualifier into the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's' Tennis Championship in the spring.

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Chargers women's tennis team beat the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) by a 6-1 Final to earn a bid at repeating their championship title. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Chargers held a 2-1 advantage after the doubles sessions as junior Grace Carpenter (Milford, N.H.) and first-year Maria Espinosa Lopez (Merida, Mexico) picked up a 8-0 win in number one doubles, while senior Mary Thoms (Northwood, N.H.) and junior Mei Genest (Keene, N.H.) picked up 8-4 win in number three doubles. 
  • In singles action Carpenter, Amelia Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.), Thoms, and Genest took home wins all winning in two sets.

BRIGHTON, Mass. - For the third consecutive year, Regis College has advanced to the championship match of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis Tournament after defeating Simmons, 5-1, Saturday morning in a semifinal contest at the Daly Field Tennis Courts.

The Pride grabbed a 2-1 lead in doubles, starting with an 8-2 victory by Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Stephanie Beatrice (Rockland, Mass.) at number one doubles. At number two doubles, Harmony Lopez (Carlsbad, N.M.) and Samantha Gevry (Dudley, Mass.) picked up an 8-1 win to bring Regis into singles with the lead.  

In singles, Gevry struck first with a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-2) at number four singles, followed quickly by Thompson at number one singles, also in straight sets (6-0, 6-1). Lopez would clinch the match for the Pride with a straight set victory at number three singles (6-4, 6-1), advancing Regis into the conference championship match for the third straight season.
