Colby-Sawyer Wraps Up GNAC Women’s Tennis Regular Season With Win, Earns Top Tournament Seed

GNAC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

WINTHROP, Mass. – Colby-Sawyer concluded the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season on Sunday (Oct. 8) with a 7-2 victory over Simmons to finish 4-0 (4-2 overall) in GNAC play. With the win the Chargers earn the top seed in the upcoming GNAC Championship Tournament.

Colby-Sawyer, the two-time defending GNAC Women's Tennis Tournament Champion will be looking for the three-peat in 2023. This year's flawless conference season, marks the third-straight year the Chargers have been perfect in GNAC play.

The three other tournament contenders – Simmons, Regis, and the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) – all finished 2-2 during the conference season, requiring the league's tiebreaking procedure to determine seeding.

All three teams were 1-1 in head-to-head play offering no relief in the first tiebreaking step. Teams were then compared based on "points for" in matches between the tied teams.

The Sharks collected 10 points in head-to-head matchups with the Blue Jays and Pride, besting the nine and eight points those programs had in head-to-head matchups, respectively. As a result, Simmons earned the No. 2 seed and the other semifinal hosting duty on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds were also determined by tiebreaker with the Pride and Blue Jays starting the procedure from the top. Regis earned the No. 3 seed based on its head-to-head win against the USJ on Oct. 6.

In the semifinals on Oct. 14, the top-seeded Chargers will host the Blue Jays, while the Sharks will host the Pride. First serve at CSC is at noon, while the Simmons-Regis match will start at 10 a.m. The semifinal winners will advance to the GNAC Championship match on Saturday, Oct. 21 with the higher seed in the matchup playing host. The GNAC Tournament Champion will earn the conference's automatic qualifier into the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's' Tennis Championship in the spring.
