NEW LONDON, N.H. – For the third time in four years, the Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team are the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Champions after defeating Regis College by a 5-1 final on Saturday. With the win, the Chargers clinched a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament, which will take place in May.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers battled hard to take a 2-1 advantage in doubles as sophomore Elise Hogan (Duxbury, Mass.) and junior Alyssa Owens (Grain Valley, Mo.) picked up a 8-3 victory in number two doubles, while sophomore Isabella Gutierrez Avendaño (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and sophomore Lily Tria (Westerly, R.I.) cruised to a 8-2 win in third doubles. In the first doubles match sophomore Grace Carpenter (Milford, N.H.) and senior Emily Hill (Wilmington, Mass.) were bested by Kianna Thompson and Samantha Gevry by a 8-7 (9-7) final.
- In singles action Hill got revenge finishing off Regis College 6-0, 6-2 in third singles to score the third point for Colby-Sawyer. Next was Hogan who won the fifth singles by a 6-1, 6-2 final. Closing things out was sophomore Amelia Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) winning the sixth singles by a 6-2, 6-3 final.
Player Spotlight:
"I am so proud of this team," said sophomore Elise Hogan (Duxbury, Mass.). "This was definitely a challenging match with a strong team that kept us on our toes the whole time. It came down to a few close singles matches but I had faith in my team that they would pull through. It was one of the best feelings when Amelia clinched it and I'm so proud of every single one of us!"
Coaches Corner:
"Congrats to Regis tennis on a great season," said head coach Barry Schoonmaker. "Coach Wong had those ladies playing well and giving us a lot of trouble. We didn't play well, but that is because our opponents made it difficult. However, we were tough and toughness wins. I am very proud of the squad for taking care of business when teams were going after us all season."
Notes and Notables:
- This is the 10th women's tennis conference championship in 13 years for head coach Barry Schoonmaker at Colby-Sawyer with this being his third GNAC title.
- Hogan was named GNAC Tournament MVP after picking up four points in the GNAC Tournament. Hill and Campanella were also later named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
