2023 GNAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced

WINTHROP, Mass. – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) announced its 2023 Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams and major award winners on Tuesday afternoon. Three schools – Emmanuel, Lasell, and Johnson & Wales – each had six selections, which was most in the conference.

Voting was conducted by the league's 16 women's soccer head coaches following the regular season and did not take postseason play into account.

Colby-Sawyer's Bridget O'Connell earned the league's top offensive honor as the Offensive Player of the Year, while Johnson & Wales' Emily DeRoehn was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year. Mitchell goalkeeper Gemma Landry was named Goalkeeper of the Year and JWU's Sophia Warburton earned Rookie of the Year honors. Rivier head coach Daniel Milton was voted Coach of the Year by his peers and Simmons won the Institutional Sportsmanship Award.

The full list of All-Conference honorees, the All-Rookie Team, and the representatives on the All-Sportsmanship Team can be viewed below.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Bridget O'Connell, Colby-Sawyer

O'Connell was the GNAC leader in goals and points in conference play, recording 17 scores and five assists for a 39-point total. Overall, in the regular season she scored 19 goals giving her 43 total points. At the end of the regular season, she sat just outside of the top-10 nationally in goals scored. She scored at least one point in 14 contests and had five games in which she found the back of the net at least twice. She recorded a hat trick against Mitchell on Oct. 7 and added an assist for a seven-point game. She was named Player of the Week in the weeks ending Sept. 17 and Sept. 24.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Emily DeRoehn, Johnson & Wales

DeRoehn was the leader of a Johnson & Wales defensive unit that produced miniscule 0.33 goals-against average in conference play and 0.60 overall. In league play DeRoehn and her defensive unit gave up only five total goals with Wildcat goalkeepers only needing to make 15 total saves in 15 matches. DeRoehn was a solid center back, winning balls and taking free kicks. She was even involved in the offense, scoring seven goals and three assists.

GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR

Gemma Landry, Mitchell

Landry was one of the most challenged goalkeepers in the country this year, facing more than 11 shots a game. However, despite the volume of shots, she was able make the stop more often than not and finished the regular season in the in the top-20 nationally in total saves. She was challenged to make seven or more saves 11 times and had double-digit save totals six times. She did pick up two clean sheets in conference play, helping her earn Goalkeeper of the Week honors in the week ending Oct. 15.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Sophia Warburton, Johnson & Wales

Warburton put together an impressive rookie campaign for Johnson & Wales as she found herself in the starting lineup immediately. That proved to be a good decision as she produced nine goals and six assists during the regular season, giving her 24 points overall. Those totals placed her toward the top of the conference in scoring. With all 24 of her points coming in league play, she ranked third overall in the category. Warburton also made her goals count as three of her nine scores accounted for game-winners. She had two multi-goal games this season and six games in which she contributed to multiple scores either by finishing or recording an assist. She won Rookie of the Week honors in the week ending Oct. 8.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Daniel Milton, Rivier

Milton led his Rivier squad to an 8-5-2 record in the GNAC this season (9-6-3 overall). The season earned Rivier a trip to the GNAC Championship Tournament as the No. 7 seed, which was quite a climb from the 2022 campaign when the Raiders failed to win a game in conference play. Milton's squad was extremely competitive this year with three of its losses coming by just one-goal deficits. The Raiders scored almost two goals a game with a 1.78 scoring average.
