GNAC Women's Basketball Report: Week 10

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Angelica Hurley, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Junior, G/F - Groveland, Mass.) - While averaging just 25 minutes per game in a pair of GNAC wins, Hurley contributed 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 52.9% (9-17) from the field, 45.5% (5-11) from three-point range, and 75% (6-8) from the FT line in important GNAC wins over Emmanuel and Johnson & Wales last week. The junior guard scored 16 points with six boards, four assists, and two steals in a key 83-67 triumph over Emmanuel on Tuesday. She had 13 points and three boards in just 21 minutes of action against JWU as the Monks improved to 8-0 in GNAC play.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Madi Zancan, Regis (Mass.) (Fy., F - Cumberland, R.I.) - Zancan led the Pride to a 3-0 week on the road in GNAC play, averaging 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game while shooting 66.7% (30-45) from the floor. On Tuesday at Lasell, she notched her second double-double of the season with a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks. On Thursday at USJ, Zancan scored 11 of her 20 points in the fourth to help the Pride move into second place in the GNAC South Division. On Saturday at Elms, she shot 11-for-14 from the field, her best effort this season with at least 10 attempts, to go witg seven rebounds, four assists, four steals, and four blocks. For the season, Zancan is now second in the GNAC in field goal percentage at 54.7 percent. 


GNAC HONOR ROLL

Caitlyn Scott, Albertus Magnus (Jr., G - White Plains, N.Y.) - Scott led the Falcons last week with 20.5 points per game as the team posted a 2-0 record. The junior guard went 8-fo-16 (50%) from the field to go along with 2.5 assists and 1. 5 steals per game. Scott started the week off by scoring a season-high 30 points to go along with three steals, an assist, and a rebound in the road victory over JWU. She then racked up 11 points, two rebounds, and four assists to help lead the Falcons past Dean this past Saturday. 

Courtney Brewster, Colby-Sawyer (So, F - Castleton, Vt.) - Brewster had a big week for the Chargers in a 3-0 week averaging 8.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. Courtney's best game came on January 21st where Brewster had 10 points, 15 rebounds and a pair of blocks while missing most of the fourth quarter due to injury.

Kayla Jackson, Elms (First Year, F - Saugus, Mass.) - The rookie averaged 15.0 points and 15.7 rebounds in a 1-2 week for the Blazers, double-doubling in all three contests. She had a monster 18-pooint, 21-rebound performance in a 71-64 win over Anna Maria. She also had 15 & 16 at JWU before finishing with 12 & 10 versus Regis. 

Yannie Chan, Emmanuel (Mass.) (So, F - Hong Kong, China) - Chan averaged 19.0 points over two games for Emmanuel, shooting at a 50.0% clip from the field (16-32). The sophomore opened the week with a game-high 23 point outing vs. Saint Joseph's (ME) before a 15 point showing at home vs. Lasell in just 20 minutes of action. Chan also averaged 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists over the two league matches for EC.

Haley Brewster, Norwich (So, G - Virginia Beach, Va.) - Brewster was an offensive weapon for the Cadets last week, first pouring in 27 points, hauling down nine boards, dishing out four helpers and snagging two steals to lead Norwich to a come-from-behind victory at Anna Maria. The sophomore followed that up by drilling four treys en route to 20 points at St. Joseph. For the week, Brewster shot a blistering 44.1% from the floor and 36.8% from beyond the arc while going a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe to finish with averages of 23.5 points, 7.5 caroms and 2.5 assists.

Elisabeth Stapelfeld, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Freshman, G - Brookline, N.H.) - Stapelfeld averaged 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Monks and helped lead Saint Joseph's to an important GNAC win over Emmanuel with 17 points, five boards, and two steals in the 83-67 triumph over the Saints on Tuesday.
