GNAC Women's Basketball Report: Week 4

(FOR THE WEEK OF NOV. 26-DEC. 2)

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Rah Rah Thompson, Albertus Magnus (Jr., C/F - Bridgeport, Conn.)

Thompson averaged 21.0 points and 21.0 rebounds over two games of action as the Falcons went 3-0 on the week, shooting 73.1% (19-26 FG) overall. The junior forward double-doubled in both games to extend her season total to five. She began the week with a 26-point, 20-rebound performance in a 118-103 non-conference win over Western Connecticut State before registering 16 points, 22 rebounds and three blocks in a 75-45 win over Farmingdale State. 

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kaylee Kacavas, Rivier (Sr, G - Dracut, Mass.)

In a 1-1 week for the Raiders, Kacavas averaged 33.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals while shooting 61.1% (22-36 FG) overall, 4-of-10 from three, and a stellar 18-of-21 from the FT line. She started the week by recording a school-record 43 points on 16-of-23 shooting in the team's 78-57 win at Lesley, including three three-pointers and a perfect 8-of-8 showing from the charity stripe, before adding 23 points and seven boards in a road loss to Manhattanville. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Dede Stevenson, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Fr., G - Hartford, Conn.)

Over three games, Stevenson averaged 14.3 points and 4.7 rebounds  for the Wildcats, highlighted by a career-high 30 points with nine rebounds at Brandeis on Saturday afternoon. 


WEEK 4 HONOR ROLL
Jill Johnson, Albertus Magnus (Sr., G - North Haven, Conn.) - In a 3-0 week, Johnson averaged 21.7 points and 6.7 assists while shooting 42.6% (23-54 FG) from the field and 58.6 percent from the free throw line. The senior began the week recording a double-double behind a season-high 27 points and 12 assists in the win over WCSU. Johnson registered 15 points, three assists and two steals in the win over Farmingdale State before collecting 23 points, four rebounds, five assists, six steals and a block in the win over New Rochelle. 

Yuleska Ramirez-Tejeda, Emmanuel (Mass.) (Jr, G - Cambridge, Mass.) - Ramirez-Tejeda averaged 13.0 points on 60% shooting (12-20 FG) and 8.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week for Emmanuel. The junior recorded 14 points and seven boards against #7 Amherst before scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds in a win over Salem State. She added four assists and three steals for EC.

Emily Oliver, Norwich (Sr., G - Sagamore Hills, Ohio) - Dropped 24 points against UMaine Augusta in 73-60 Norwich, going 6-of-11 from three. Averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.0 steal in two games this week. She was also named to Hockenbury Classic All-Tournament team.

Sam D'Angelo, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., F - Woburn, Mass.) - D'Angelo had 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds in just 22 minutes as Regis fell to fast-paced Westfield State in its home opener. 

Melicia Mendez, St. Joseph (Conn.) (So., G/F - Hartford, Conn.) - Mendez led the Blue Jays on the week with 18 points off the bench on 6-of-8 shooting to go with seven rebounds in just 25 minutes  in a 57-45 setback at home to Suffolk in USJ's GNAC opener on Saturday.

Emily Benway, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Senior, F - Rochester, N.H.) - Benway averaged 18.0 points and 13.5 rebounds while shooting 53.3% (16-30) from the floor in a pair of victories last week. In a 93-71 victory over Bates on Saturday, the senior forward scored 24 points off an 11-of-17 shooting performance to become the 24th member of the Monks' 1,000-point club. She posted a pair of double-doubles on the week as she grabbed 12 rebounds in the win over Bates and scored 12 points with a career-high 15 rebounds in a 71-55 triumph over UNE on Wednesday.

Jenni-Rose DiCecco, Suffolk (So., G - Falmouth, Mass.) - After playing all 50 minutes of a double overtime setback at Bridgewater State, DiCecco averaged 41.0 minutes per game last week as the Rams went 2-1. The sophomore averaged 18.7 points on 56.1% shooting (23-41 FG) to go along with 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.3 steals. She had 20 points, six boards, five assists and six swipes in a win over Curry before registering 20 points and nine boards against Bridgewater. She capped the week with a 16-point, six-rebound, six-assist effort in a win at USJ.
