GNAC Softball Report: Week 1

( FOR THE OPENING WEEKS OF FEB. 24 - MARCH 5 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jordyn Rubin, Simmons (Junior, DP/OF - Lewiston, Maine) - Posting an .800 batting average (4-5) with a 1.833 OPS (1.000 SLG%, .833 OBP), Rubin guided Simmons to a 1-1 week, which included going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI in a 15-4 victory over regional foe Gordon to open the season. In the Sharks' second game of the season, Rubin came off the bench and went 1-for-2 against Concordia Chicago. 
 

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Maddie Castigliego, Simmons (Senior, P - Bristol, R.I.) - Castigliego, the 2022 GNAC Softball Pitcher of the Year, guided the Simmons to a 1-1 week, which included a convincing 15-4 win over Gordon to begin the 2023 season. Against the Fighting Scots, she tossed five complete innings allowing four unearned runs while striking out five and walking none. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Mady Lyons, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Fr., C - Prior Lake, Minn.) - Lyons went 2-for-3 in her collegiate debut with a pair of RBI singles in a 4-1 win over Thomas (ME) College on Sunday in Florida. She pushed across the Wildcats second run of the afternoon with a single to center in the second before lacing a run-scoring single to right in the sixth.

HONOR ROLL

Andria Braga, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., C/UTL - Rehoboth, Mass.) - Braga led the Pride offensively in the first two games of the season Sunday. First, she went 2-for-3 with one run scored against Bridgewater State. Later, in a back-and-forth game against Penn State-Hazleton, she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. In the fifth inning, she picked up an RBI single to put the Pride ahead, 2-1, and then she came around to score to increase the Regis lead to 4-1. In the top of the seventh, her two-run double pulled Regis within one at 7-6, and then she scored the game-tying run as the Pride eventually entered the bottom of the seventh with an 8-7 lead. 
 
Sarah Frazier, Rivier (So., IF - Londonderry, NH) - In the two games Frazier played in, she hit .500 (4-8) with five of the team's eight RBI. Frazier had two doubles, giving her a .750 slugging. Her best game came against St. Vincent, where she was 3-for-4 with all three of the team's RBIs. Defensively she was perfect, recording three putouts and three assists. 
 
Meredith Pence, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Senior, LHP - Remington, Va.) - Pence twirled a gem in the Monks' season opener on Sunday when the senior southpaw tossed a complete game shutout with four strikeouts while scattering three hits and four walks in a 3-0 triumph over Catholic.
