GNAC Men's Lacrosse Report: Week 1

( FOR THE OPENING WEEKS OF FEB. 15 - MARCH 5 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Diego Alvarez-Segee, Dean (Jr, A - Saugus, Mass.) - Alvarez-Segee led the Bulldogs with 17 points on 12 goals and five assists in a pair of wins to begin the season. He added eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. The junior attacker began 2023 with a game-best seven points on three goals and four assists in a 24-3 road win at Mitchell. The reigning GNAC Offensive Player of the Year then posted a game-high 10 points on nine goals and an assist in the team's 17-10 triumph over Sage. 
 

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Trent Madigan, Johnson & Wales (RI) (So., G - Ayer, Mass.) - Madigan posted a .730 save percentage in backstopping the Wildcats to the first 2-0 start in program history. He turned aside 11 shots in a one-goal win against USM on Wednesday, then stopped 16 shots in a win over Thomas (ME) on Sunday. Madigan holds a 5.00 GAA through 120 minutes of action.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Matthew Hutchings, Albertus Magnus (Fr., A - Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) - Hutchings accumulated a team-high 18 points on 13 goals and five assists to help the Falcons to a 3-0 start to the 2023 spring season. He opened the week netted two goals and two assists for four points in the Falcons' home opener against Salem State. He followed that up with an impressive six-goal, one-assist outing in a 25-4 road victory at Centenary. Hutchings closed out last week with a seven-point performance behind five goals and two assists in the 21-6 Falcons' win over Thomas (ME). 

HONOR ROLL

Derek Ralston, Albertus Magnus (Gr., M - Gilford, Conn.) - Ralston helped guide the Falcons to a 3-0 start to the season with 18 points on 14 goals and four assists. He kicked off the spring campaign with a four-point performance behind four goals in the Falcons 11-6 victory over Salem State before tallying three goals and three assists for six points in the 25-4 road victory over Centenary (N.J.). Ralston then closed out the week with a season-high eight points following a seven-goal, one-assist performance in the 21-6 Falcons' win over Thomas (ME). 
 
Dane Walsh, Albertus Magnus (Gr., GK - Bethany, Conn.) - In a 3-0 start to the spring campaign, Walsh was lights-out between the pipes for the Falcons, posting a 6.31 goals-against average with a 65.0 save percentage. Walsh opened the season tallying 11 saves in the Falcons' 11-6 win over Salem St, before recording four saves in a 25-4 win over Centenary. He capped the week with his second 11-save performance in the 21-6 home victory against Thomas (ME).
 
Noah Fye, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Sr., A - Concord, N.H.) - Fye potted six goals in a pair of JWU wins last week to spark the Wildcats to their first-ever 2-0 start. He opened the season with a three-goal effort in a one-goal win over USM, including the game-winner in the fourth. Four days later, Fye racked up five points (3-2-5) in a win over Thomas (ME). Fye is second on JWU with eight points. 
 
Jack Haley, Norwich (Jr, M - Falkville, Ala.) - Haley had a career week to kick off his junior campaign, first tallying a career-best four goals in Norwich's season-opener against Plymouth State on just five shots. Two days later, he had a goal in Norwich's 10-4 rout over NEC on two shots on goal, converting on a 50.0% shot percentage.
 
Ryan Richardson, Regis (Mass.) (Sr., A - Corona, Calif.) - Richardson led Regis to a season-opening victory at MCLA Sunday afternoon. He notched his fifth career hat trick with three goals, plus he dished out two assists to tie his career high for points with five. His first goal tied the match at 2-2 late in the first quarter, while his second goal of the day put the Pride ahead 3-2 early in the second quarter. His third goal tied the match at 5-5, and then his two assists later in the third quarter gave Regis a lead it would not relinquish. 
 
Michael Ference, Rivier (Jr., A - Salem, N.H.) - In a close 12-11 setback with a tough opponent in Keene State, Ferrence netted six goals on seven shots. He also added two groundballs to his name in the non-conference contest. 
 
Evan Baden, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Sr., M - Burlington, Conn.) - Led the Blue Jays to a 2-1 record to start the season, tallying 11 points off 8 goals and three assists. Recorded a shot on goal percentage of 70.8 percent. Started the season with a 2 goals and one assist in an upset overtime victory against Curry. Followed up the Curry game with 4 goals and 2 assists in the blowout win against Castleton. Ended the opening stretch o the. season by scoring two of USJ's three goals in a loss at Nichols.
