MLAX: Norwich Wins First-Ever NCAA Tournament Contest with 20-12 Win Over Maine Maritime

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team picked up the programs first victory in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday, defeating Maine Maritime, 20-12, on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Norwich was led by senior Parker Campbell (Rockaway, N.J.) who scored seven points in the matchup with two goals and five assists, breaking the Norwich University career points record. Payden Masaracchia (Enola, Pa.) scored six goals, including goal number 150 for his career. Jake Andrews-Pestana (Napa, Calif.) scored three galls, and Jack Anzalone (Ridgewood, N.J.) had three points with two goals and an assist.

Thomas Muraski (Keller, Texas) went 24 for 33 in his faceoff attempts while and Andrew Vernon (Cheshire, Conn.) earned his fifth win of the season.

Maine Maritime scored the first goal of the contest. But after a goal by Anzalone sparked the Norwich offense with 7:13 remaining in the first to tie the contest, Norwich continued to rattle off eight straight goals taking an 8-1 lead at 4:59 into the second quarter. Maine Maritime scored off of a goal by Sam Nichol, but Tyler Seidel(Centreville, Md.) scored 45 seconds later to go up 9-2. The Mariners scored twice, before Matt Meehan (Norfolk, Mass.) broke up another pair of goals by Maine Maritime.  Norwich led 10-6 at the half.

Trailing 15-10, Jayden Wilson scored to bring the Mariners within four. Norwich then rattled off four straight goals to take an eight-goal lead with 7:30 remaining in the matchup, as Norwich traded a goal with the Mariners as they held on to the win.

Norwich (19-1, 10-0 GNAC) advances to the second round against Tufts on Saturday, May 14 at 1 pm. The Cadets pod consists of Tufts, St. John Fisher, and Catholic.
