GNAC Field Hockey Report: Week 8

( FOR THE WEEK OF OCT. 17 - 23 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Margaret Johnson, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Sr., M/F - Bear, Del.) - Johnson racked up eight points in a pair of wins last week for JWU. She began the week with a goal and an assist in a win over Colby-Sawyer, then notched two goals and an assist on Senior Day against Lasell. Johnson has 33 points (11-11-33) in 15 games this season.

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Serena Montague, Albertus Magnus (Jr., GK - Englishtown, N.J.) - Montague tallied a pair of solid showings in the cage for Albertus this week, picking up her second career win over that stretch. The junior netminder first helped guide the Falcons to a thrilling 2-1 win over Elms in a shootout on Wednesday. Montague allowed one goal and finished with eight saves over regulation and two overtimes. She then stopped all four of the Blazers attempts in the shootout to pick up the GNAC victory. Montague followed that up by making 11 saves against Colby-Sawyer on Saturday afternoon. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Maya Waryas, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (2026, F - Bellows Falls, Vt.) - Waryas tied a team record with six goals in a lopsided victory over Dean College on Saturday.


HONOR ROLL

Meghan Sonia, Anna Maria (Sr., M - West Tisbury, Mass.) - Sonia helped lead the AMCATS to a 2-0 week in the GNAC and their fourth consecutive conference win. She had the game-winning assist in a 3-2 win over River and the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Elms. The AMCATS are 6-4 in the GNAC and 7-8 overall. They are 7-2 in their last nine games. 

Aoife Daly, Colby-Sawyer (Sr, F) - In a 1-1 week, which included a 3-0 road setback to GNAC leading JWU, Daly followed up with two goals in a 7-0 win over Albertus Magnus on Saturday.

Sydney Gonyea, Simmons (Sophomore, A - Lebanon, N.H.) - Gonyea surpassed the Simmons field hockey program season-record in goals by registering a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the team's 11th shutout of the season, a 4-0 road victory over Regis. Gonyea tied Julie Saltamartini's 2017 mark of 21 goals, scoring Saturday afternoon's first goal of the game four minutes into the first quarter. She eclipsed the program record tallying the fourth and final goal of the contest against the Pride in the 54th minute of the game.
