GNAC Baseball Report: Week 5

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 28 - APRIL 3

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Matthew Bischof, Lasell (Senior, Catcher - Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) - Bischof posted a slash line of .529/.625/.882 in a 4-2 week, going 9-for-17 with six runs, five RBI, three doubles, one homer and four walks. In a doubleheader sweep over Elms, the catcher was 6-for-6 with four extra-base hits and four RBI.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Kyle Cutler, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Sr., P - East Hampton, Conn.) - In his lone start of the week, Cutler pitched a complete game shutout for the Wildcats, earning them a conference victory over Colby-Sawyer. Cutler only allowed one hit, striking out eight batters. He only allowed three batters to reach base, finishing the seven-inning game with a 10.29 K/9 innings. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Jeremy Rosenberg, Anna Maria (Fr., INF/LHP - Boynton Beach, Fla.) - Rosenberg busted out this past week, slashing .545/.583/.818 with a home run and three RBI in three games, which included a doubleheader sweep of JWU. The first-year first baseman put on a show against the Wildcats on Saturday with a Game 2 two-run blast in the bottom of the first that set the tone for a massive offensive performance for Anna Maria in a 20-8 blowout. For the season, Rosenberg is hitting .400 with 11 RBI in 14 games.

GNAC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
  
Fili Veras, Anna Maria (Gr., RHP/INF - Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) - Veras dominated game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Johnson & Wales, going the distance as he struck out six in seven innings with no earned runs allowed, while scattering five hits. In his last three outings, Veras is 3-0 with just one earned run allowed over 20 innings.
  
Elijah Spataj, Anna Maria (Jr., INF/OF - Cheshire, Conn.) - Spataj exploded for the AMCATS in Saturday's doubleheader against JWU in a rematch of last year's GNAC Championship series, hitting .800 (5-9) with two runs and six RBI. In a momentum-swinging moment in game two, Spataj forced a 19-pitch at-bat before finally drawing the walk.
 
Tommy Sasso, Colby-Sawyer (Jr, OF - Grafton, Mass.) - Sasso put his best week of his collegiate career going 7-for-17 with a double, triple, homerun, six RBIs and nine runs scored.
 
Ryan Desmond, Dean (Fr, OF/RHP - Long Island, N.Y.) - Desmond hit .500 in a 4-0 week for the Bulldogs. He went 8-16 at the plate, scored five runs and knocked in two. The freshman slugged .750 for the week. Desmond began the week with a 2-for-4 effort in a 5-4 win at Lesley. He then hit a triple to help the team earn a 10-5 win at Springfield. After a hitless game one in the team's 6-2 win over Rivier, Desmond made up for it in a big way with a 5-for-5 performance in game two. He had a couple of doubles, two RBI and scored three runs in the 14-13 walkoff victory. 
 
George Chaya, Elms (First Year) - Chaya posted a 1.318 OPS in a 2-2 week, hitting .455 with a double, homer, three runs and four RBI.
 
CJ Kuentzel, Elms (First Year) - Kuentzel posted a a 1.35 ERA, striking out 13 (one walk) over 6.2 innings for the Blazers. He struck out all four he faced against Lasell before allowing just one run on four hits in 5.0 innings at Rivier. 
 
Trevor Juan, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Fy., OF - Bolton, Conn.) - Juan helped the Wildcats to a pair of conference wins on the week, finishing with a .333 batting average, .448 on base percentage, and a.625 slugging percentage. Juan scored eight runs in six games, and had two home runs. He connected on a grad slam against Anna Maria before hitting a home run against Colby-Sawyer, driving in two runs in both ends of the doubleheader.
 
Samuel Jalbert, Saint Joseph's (Maine) (Junior, RHP - Mascouche, Quebec) - Jalbert tossed a complete-game gem in a 5-1 victory over Norwich University on Sunday. The junior righthander was perfect through four innings and finished the game having allowed a run on two hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in seven frames.
