The 2009 baseball season for the Suffolk University (30-11) came
to a close as the Rams took their second loss in the NCAA New
England Regional Tournament. The Eastern Connnecticut State
Warriors (36-7), who entered the tournament as the top seed and
ranked third nationally, pounded the Rams 13-2 in the elimination
game. EConn pounded out 16 hits, including their top two hitters
going a combined 9-for-11 to cruise to the victory. The Rams
scattered seven hits throughout the game but could not muster a big
hit to keep them in the game as they left 10 runners on base. The
Warriors spread the game open scoring twice in the sixth and added
five runs in the seventh and did not look back.
The loss marks the end of a successful season for Suffolk's
program. 2009 marked the fourth time in baseball's 62-year program
that a team reached 30 wins, and fourth time Suffolk has earned an
NCAA berth.
The loss also marks the end of eight careers for players in Suffolk
uniforms. Seniors Dan Delia, Tim Doyle, Reid Jackson, Anthony
Iacopucci, Nick Chioffi, Keith Carter, Mike Kenneally and Paul
Vittozzi. All eight seniors will be earning their degrees at
Suffolk's graduation ceremony this weekend.
