St. Joe’s Pushes Past Elms, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (10-2, 6-0 GNAC) defeated Elms College (4-7, 3-4 GNAC), 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks dominated possession and found the back of the cage just two minutes into the game when sophomore Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) netted her third goal of the season.

St. Joe's continued to control the pace of play and notched numerous scoring opportunities, but Elms senior netminder Nora Newman (Woburn, Mass.) proceeded to hold the hosts off the board until the 25th minute, when senior Olivia Esposito (North Reading, Mass.) scored off an Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine) assist on a 2-v-1 fast break.

Freshman Abbie Jacques (Mount Vernon, Maine) capped the game scoring in the 48th minute when she potted her fifth marker of the season off a pass from classmate Danielle Libby (Windham, Maine).

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (42-1), shots on goal (34-1), and penalty corners (21-2). Elms notched a 2-0 lead in defensive saves.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC freshman starter Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine) made one save in the victory while Newman made a career-high 31 saves in the loss.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Today's meeting was the first-ever between the institutions' field hockey programs.

Saint Joseph's will play at Dean College on Wednesday in a GNAC matchup set to start at 3:30 PM.
